Description
Scientific name: Saurolophus angustirostris
Diet: plants (at the Zoo they are fed grass, leaves and fruit)
Projected natural lifespan: 30 years
Length: 9.8 meters (~32 feet)
Weight: 1,645 kilograms (~3,627 pounds)
Locality: Gobi Desert, Mongolia (Nemegt Formation), 70 Ma (Late Cretaceous Maastrichtian)
Exhibit: Hadrosaur Herds
About:
Though not that well-known, Saurolophus was actually one of the first hadrosaurs known. Its fossil remains are known from two modern-day continents.
Description and behavior:
Hadrosaurs like Saurolophus were animals that lived in large herds for protection. These herds were made of family groups that banded together and were the most abundant herbivores of their ancient environment. Saurolophus in particular was one of the more populous hadrosaurs, whose range spanned two modern day continents, North America and Asia, where they developed into two species. S. angustirostris here was the Asian species, larger than the North American S. osborni. This species preferred forested habitats especially those near water features, as their climate is quite arid and they need frequent access to food and water. This is a contrast to S. osborni whose entire habitat was forested and so could roam around more freely. Another way to distinguish the two species is their color. S. osborni has a spotted or mottled coloration, whereas S. angustirostris has stripes. Like in modern lizards, these patterns were formed by differing sizes of scales on their hide. The two species also have differing crest shapes. S. osborni's curved along the top of the skull and pointed straight up, while S. angustirostris' ran along a diagonal line on top of the skull and pointed upwards at a 45 degree angle (see picture)
At the Zoo:
The Hadrosaur Herds exhibit houses four Saurolophus, all males, named Osborn, Angus, Kryschtofovic and Morris.

The behavior is inspired by cows, ducks and lizards.
