Description Damn DA and their nonsensical categories! Like the only fantasy categories are "sword and sorcery", "animals", and "manga"? What about all the other types of fantasy? Get with the goddamn program DA! This is less fantasy than humor, but it's not a comic strip or whatever... Ah forget it.

This is one of the pieces I finished a couple of weeks ago for the Circus show this upcoming weekend at the Alcove gallery in Atlanta! I had a sketch that had been sitting around for several years that was a line from the Tom Waits song "Goin' Out West" about "the devil on a leash". Now that I think about it, three of the four pieces I did for this show were inspired by Tom Waits songs! Jeez, I should be sending him royalty checks or something! Anyway, I had been planning to do something with the sketch eventually, and this idea came to me because the guy in the original sketch had a big ol' top hat like my ringmaster here. So I just tweaked the original idea a bit, redefined the characters, changed the background, and abracadabra! A brand new painting!

You may ask yourself, "What the hell's going on in this painting?" Well, I'm not completely sure either, but if I had to guess, I'd say the ringmaster made some kinda deal with a fellow who may have been somewhat untrustworthy, and ended up as the guardian of this troublesome creature. He probably thought he'd make a bit of money off of the beast as a sideshow attraction, but instead, all it's brought him is misery. So now he's going over his options and wondering if he could find some way to , erm, dispose of his little problem. And it seems like the little problem has just realized what his owner's intentions may be. Or maybe the little devil just farted, who knows!

16" x 20" acrylic on canvas

I always learn something new on each painting, and I learned several things on this one.

1) ALWAYS check to make sure your standard sized prestretched canvas's stretcher bars are square before priming and transferring your design.

2) After you realize it's not square, make sure to prime the other standard size prestretched canvas you grab instead of being impatient and realizing when you're almost done transferring the design that you FORGOT to apply the gesso first.

3) Cheap, factory primed canvases do not accept paint well, and the hollows in the canvas make for lots of frustrating while dimples when you paint. Wouldn't have been as much of a problem if you'd put more gesso on there, you moron!

4) I have to paint shiny top hats about three of four times before I get it right.

Ever try painting on Masonite or other panel-type surfaces?

I paint on scrap MDF panels from time to time. My next few paintings will probably be on that since I have a whole bunch of long scrap pieces taking up too much space in my laundry room!

A bit heavy, but nice and flat.

I also have a bunch of plywood panels too, a little bit lighter weight.

Yes, though they do tend to warp after being painted upon.

Ha. I think that's an interesting metaphor. Or certainly is different to use a circus as one anyway.

It's also very refreshing to see such a bright coloured painting which expresses the opposite. There's a lot of yellow and red, and yet they don't blend into each other.
It looks great.

Wow. It looks awesome. By your description, you can write a whole children book about the unlucky ringmaster... Or a farthing demon .

Oh, I don't know if it'd be appropriate for children.

You won't believe what children books I see here. Most of them are translations from English, but I don't know how they are called, but I saw:
Who Crapped On My Head?
Is That You Asaf? (About a farting kid)
Everyone Have A Bellybutton
And more like those...

I love how you manage to get lots of depth and texture in, but still keep things really cartoony.

And hey, there are worse people to be inspired by than Tom Waits

Aikin [2009-03-04 22:09:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, sometimes the DA category system gets it right, but other times it doesn't. The photography section has similar weirdness to it. Such as missing a fungus and mammal section. (but reptiles and birds do)Or that invertebrates get their own section but vertebrates don't. Or that Aquatic life gets a section, but Terrestrial life doesn't. It's an odd mishmash of broad and narrow categories to choose from.

Anyway, I like how the painting is heavily 'duel-chromatic' with out just using two colors. While reds and yellows are dominate, they are not too blaring thanks to the neutrals and bits of blue through the out the painting. Which is nicely thought out.

Also, the guy's expression is wonderful! I think the little demon let a squeaker through his cheeks while the ringmaster was talking to someone, heh heh!

ATLbladerunner In reply to Aikin [2009-03-04 22:33:15 +0000 UTC]

LMAO! Yeah one of those that starts out like a regular poot, then halfway through transforms into a high pitched squeal like holding the end of a balloon tight and slowly letting the air out!

Glad you like the colors! I hadn't really intended it to come out that way, most of the time I don't bother with a color rough, I just have a vague idea in my head as to the color scheme. In the past it's led to more trouble and repainting than I'd care to mention, but sometimes it all falls into place.

Well, these aren't the illuminati, freemason, x-files, one ring to rule them all, "keep it secret, keep it safe" paintings. The next few I post are gonna be on display this weekend, but then it'll be a while before I can post any more. I promised the gallery owner I wouldn't show them off to a lotta people until the show in September, and I guess posting them to the interwebs would qualify as "showing them to a lotta people". I may sneak a couple on here though.

Thanks for the good vibes! If it works my checking account and mortgage company will thank you. And thanks for the fave, pal!

You could note them to those "important" people...
Did I ever tell you how important I was?

Take care
