-Fomorian, the ancient ones-

An ancient and monstruous race of beings who were Ireland's first settlers in ancient Irish mythology. Their origins and exact nature varies drastically depending on the story, sometimes described as originating from the sea itself, or coming from distant lands to Ireland as sea raiders. Their appearance is varied, some fomorians being described as beautiful and very human-like, and others with bull and goats heads, skeleton bodies, multiple rows of teeth and so on. Their relationship with the pantheon of Irish gods, the Tuatha Dé Danann is complex, with a lot of gods having some fomorian parentage or some relationship to them, while also acting as their fierce enemies at times. When the Tuatha Dé arrived in Ireland the fomorians were already in there for a long time, and so were a group of people called the Fir Bolg, who did battle with the gods. The Tuatha Dé emerged victorious, but at the cost of their king, Nuada, losing his arm, and alongside it, his right to rule his people. The half-fomorian warrior Bres is chosen as their new king, but he ends up oppressing the Tuatha Dé, putting them under rule of the fomorian tribe, humiliating them and asking huge ammounts of tributes in their honor. Bres is eventually deposed, but returns with an army led by the terrible fomorian king Balor, who wages war on the gods. After a fierce battle, Balor is prophetically defeated by the heroic god Lugh, his own grandson, and the fomorians are driven back.

Part of a college project themed around Irish mythology  I'm working on.

Portraying the Fomorians with goat heads is already part of popular culture, appearing as such in games like Castlevania and the Megaten series, so I didn't try to stray from that. It's just creepy and it works!
But considering their sea origin I tried to incoporate some fish-like and marine aspects to it's lower body as well. The goat head and the thorns represent the land, and the amphibian legs covered in barnacles represent the sea! A monster of both worlds.

The eye motif is a reference to their leader, Balor of the evil eye. He's still going to have his day to shine here!

Hope you all liked it, I'm going to post Ogma with this one as well, so check him out too! And until next time!

Perhaps you could try drawing some of the more obscure members of the fairy folk.

Haha I love it You managed to keep the goat head while giving amphibious features ! I like the barnacles and the thorns, as well as the shield design I knew it was a reference to Balor's Evil Eye before even reading the description

I'm going to experiment with a mix of a lot of creatures for the next ones. Already made another one with a bull-like design, this is going to be fun!
Balor is going to have his time to shine here....... As soon as I know how the heck I should design him, that is.

You mean for specific Fomorians that actually have names, like Bres ?

I guess at least one of them is going to have a fish head XD ?

Yeah, the question is... how to distinguish Balor from any generic cyclops ? The birdcage from Kaneko's design still makes me smile, even though I think it's genius XD

Bres and Elatha are going to be pretty boys as they're described, I'm talking the ones that are mentioned by name, but are incredibly minor or obscure, like... Octriallach... Indech... Conand... You know, those really famous guys who are super important, unique, and everyone remembers?....

Yeah, I have a fomorian quota to fill for this project, I'm just filling the slots.
I'm probably going to throw a fish head in one of these guys, the only one I have already sketched is Conand, and he has a bull one.

My answer for that is probably going to be to focus a lot on the contrast between his body and his eye.
He keeps the goat head from the basic fomorian, but the body is probably going to be all black, evil and very simple, while the eye is going to be enormous and very colorful... In an evil way, that is.
At this moment I was trying to design Aírmed, and I kind do have some vague idea of what to do with her, but she still looks a bit too bland and I'm struggling with the pose.

Wait, does the birdcage have any meaning behind it? I never got it at all!

Okay

Yeah, the Evil Eye was a curse after all ! drew it as if it was some kind of tumor, pretty cool and disgusting

I'm currently working on a third pose for my Cu Chulainn, by the way X)

I guess it's just a typical Kaneko design fantasy, but in some stories, the Eye was often sealed by something, and its power was only unleashed at specific moments, so I think it's also a reference to that

Even two weeks later I'm still having trouble with his design
It's hard to draw an animal head with a single enormous eye that doesn't look really weird, maybe I'm going to have to try something different...

Yup, I just saw it!
Nice of you to try to design the Gae Bulg with bones as it should be, I really don't see that a lot.

It makes sense, but.... The eye is also being supported by worms, like.....What the hell?
I don't get what going on in that design at all!

What if it was a one-eyed frog head, maybe with extra ears and teeth   ? It's just an idea that came to me right now

Yeah, it's crazy that it seems that you and me are the only artists out there to design the Gae Bolg like this, while it's commonly known that it was built with the spine of a sea monster

Kaneko's mysterious ways XD

The problem with Balor is that he's tied design-wise with a lot of other characters in this project, there's a pattern going with those of Fomorian lineage here.
I wanted to keep the goat head to represent his position as king of the lesser fomorians, but also, no matter what animal he ends up being, Ethniu and Lugh (His daughter and grandson respectively) are going to share some of his design elements. For example, if he indeed ends up being a goat, Ethniu is going to have small goat horns and ears while Lugh is going to have one single big horn, or something like that... He would surely be disgusting as a frog, but I wouldn't be able to reproduce that very well.

The same is going to happen with Elatha/Bres and Indech/Octriallach. Elatha has deer-like horns in his sketch for now and so will Bres in the future.... And whatever animal I assign Indech with, his son will be similar as well.

And yup, it's the type of stuff I'm surprised I don't see more often!

Would Fir Bolg have anything to do with Gae Bolg by any chance?

AtmaFlare In reply to megamaster135 [2019-03-27 02:01:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a specialist on it, but it doesn't seem so. Fir Bolg means "Men of bags" and Gae Bulg "Spear of Mortal Pain". Bolg and Bulg seem to be completely different words.
