Description A god nobody asked me to draw, but I did it anyway cause I needed him for a personal project.

--Vidarr, Odin's avenger------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Norse mythology, Vidarr is the son of Odin, the All-father and leader of the Aesir gods,
and Gridr, a female jotunn who was an ally to the Aesir. He is brother to gods such as Thor,
Baldr and Váli, and is described as a powerful warrior almost as strong as Thor himself, who is
called upon by the Aesir to help during times of great need. During Ragnarok, it is foretold that
the monstrous wolf Fenrir will free himself from his bonds and devour Odin, who then will be
avenged by his son Vidarr. Vidarr will tear the wolf's jaw open by stepping down with one foot
on the lower jaw while grabbing the upper jaw with his hand, and then kill him by either ripping
his mouth apart or stabbing the beast in the heart with his sword. Made for the sole purpose
of fighting Fenrir, Vidarr's boots are described as being incredibly thick and strong, being made
and strengthened from collected leather scraps discarded from the making of thousands of leather
shoes (in some versions his boots are instead made of iron, though). Every time a human
discards a piece of leather, they are essentially aiding the god in his future battle against Fenrir.
He is also described as a "silent god", which has been theorized by scholars as a sort ritualistic
abstention in preparation for his act of vengeance, an oath of sorts, and may be related to the
similar customs of some Germanic tribes who absent themselves from grooming or shaving
before killing an enemy. Alongside his brother Vali, and the sons of his brother Thor, Modi and
Magni, Vidarr will be one of the few gods who will survive Ragnarok.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(No, this isn't because of the new God of War, far from it.)
Another very obscure one this time, who probably wasn't so deserving of being illustrated, and yet,
here we are.

The idea at the start was to focus on Vidarr's enormous boots as the main focus of the design. Later I
decided to focus on both his legs and shoes as a whole, the idea was for him to be a relatively scrawny
dude from the waist up, and really muscular from the waist down, almost in a comical way, trying to play
up with body proportions a bit. Remember the anchor arms from Sponge Bob? Yeah, kinda like that.

The more I did it though, the more became clear people didn't like it very much, it was just too silly, and
my drawing skills couldn't pass that huge anatomic mess as something intentional instead of me just
butchering the hell out of human anatomy yet again... Then the skull was inserted, I tried to make him
cooler, buffed him up a bit in general to compensate, and the whole leg thing was lost... He still has very
muscular legs, but I guess it isn't nowhere near as noticeable as I once intended. A bit bummed out I
didn't achieve what I set out to do, but I guess as non popular this drawing is gonna be among you all,
it's probably for the better compared to the original version.

The skull is Fenrir's of course! Taken straight out from the famous illustrations featuring the battle between
the two. Of course, it's nowhere near as big as it should be... It's just for the sake of the posing. Maybe it's
just a fake?
If there are any biology fanatics among you all, I'm sorry in advance, I tried to find good references for a wolf skull,
and this was the best I could do...

Being a silent god of vengeance and all Vidarr seemed to be to fit the edgy brooding type... The clothes and
the colors made him look a lot like Simon Belmont from the Castlevania series now that I look at it, but it wasn't
intentional. If you want to take a look at the other color palettes once considered for him, you can check that
out right here .

Well, that's it from me, hope you all liked it!
See you all next time!

I really like this design. Was he described as a redhead in myth, though? I recall that usually being a notable thing, as it was with Thor and Loki at least.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you liked it!
As far as I'm aware his hair color isn't described anywhere, but he is Thor's brother, so it makes sense to be so.
I was going to give him black hair initially tbh, but red ended up looking and fitting better.

Cool Piece of work. Neck/mouth fur scarf? Seems similar to One Piece’s Charlotte Katakuri.

Thanks!
The idea itself didn't come from Charlotte (I don't remember where I took it from tbh) but he indeed was one of my references while drawing this.

Makes sense. He is one pretty cool looking character so it is understandable.

Keep up the good work.

Just a suggestion on my part, but how about trying your hand at a Jotun: an elemental giant/godly being and the oldest advisories of the Aesir.

Just to name a few: Ymir, Surtr, Utgad-Loki, Laufey, Fenrir, Jormungandr, Hel, heck maybe even Moder (Monster from The Ritual described as a bastard child of Loki) etc

Oh, I have design ideas for a bunch of these, as always, it's mostly a matter of me getting my lazy butt to actually go and draw the damn things.

I already have some concrete ideas for Surtr, Fenrir and Hel, nothing too out of the ordinary, just a matter of getting to draw it.
I've been interested in designing Ymir as well! I still have not a lot of ideas of what to do with him, but at least I'm interested.
Others I actually seriously considered were Utgard-Loki's lesser jotun servants, Logi, Hugi and Eli. I mean, they're not actual jotunns, they're more like illusions and personifications of various concepts, but maybe because of exactly that I could get something interesting design-wise out of them.

Okay, so I have a recommendation based off of your Celtic works. In Celtic myth, there was a god known as Elatha, the progenitor of the gods in most interpretations. He was variously seen as a star, sun or fertility god, and he is usually described as wearing many golden torcs and sailing in a magic ship made of silver.

It's an interesting an interesting and mysterious one for sure. I don't have much idea of how I would design him though, but I'll be sure to remember him when considering my next drawings! ;D
On the celtic department I was considering working on Miach though, but who knows.

Well, as far as imagery goes, his arms were covered in ten gold bands (torcs) and he had bright blonde hair. He was also the father of the despised king Bres, who was half Fomorian (monster) and half Tuatha Dé Dennan (god).

Very nice work as always, I really like his fluffy collar, the skull is very well done too, especially the teeth.
Wasn't Vidarr also the one who avenged Baldr by killing Hodr or am I thinking about another god?
Also he reminds me a bit of Simon Belmont.

AtmaFlare In reply to kuronneko [2018-05-14 03:20:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!
Nah, that one was Váli, another very obscure god whose only purpose is to also avenge someone and then do nothing for the rest of his days and survive ragnarok for no discernable reason.
(If I was designing characters for a videogame, Vali could just as well be a palette swap of Vidarr, kinda like Tam Lin/Cu Chúlainn in SMT, minus the skull and the boots of course.)
He totally does, right? Specially his Chronicles design , the colors and some of the details are almost a perfect match. But nah, it wasn't intentional.
But while Simon didn't cross my mind during the design process, Leon Belmont actually did while I was deciding on the palette. I almost went with blonde hair with black/white/red clothes.

I like the work you did for the clothes ! When designing my stuff, I'm always trying to find clothes which are both memorable and accurate to the wearer's origins, and it's sometimes difficult

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtmaFlare In reply to DoctorChevlong [2018-05-12 06:33:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks as always buddy! Glad you liked it!
The clothes are always one of my favorite parts to design, but it doesn't mean they don't present a challenge every now and then, I do understand you.
The thing is that most of the time the clothes are already an integral part of the design from the conception, so it's a bit rare when I do have to come up with something later...
When that happens, if reproducing the actual historical clothes accurately isn't a must for that particular design, I usually try to create a more appealing/modern take on the costume, doing so in a way that still brings the original one to mind.
...For some reason I really hate designing shoes though, they're always the last thing I work on the design, and I always just do whatever.

DoctorChevlong In reply to AtmaFlare [2018-05-12 17:18:35 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome ! About that, someone somehow reproached me the absence of tartan patterns on my Scathach design But I'm not going to put it on every celtic character, it would be redundant... I'm actually working on three Fomorians, and they don't have irish skirts, just typical blue war paint here and there, to keep clear their origins without doing too much I'm pretty hyped about doing my Siegfried and Hagen designs, by the way ! Their costumes must be well done, since they're basically humans
Shoes have to really look good when they're important, like for Sun Wukong   Anyway, I wonder who's next on your list !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtmaFlare In reply to DoctorChevlong [2018-05-12 18:42:50 +0000 UTC]

What? They did? Well, that's silly... o.õ
If you start including it in everything then you would probably be stepping into stereotype territory. (Plus, you had just done Dagda a while ago, and he had the pattern,  it would've been very redundant indeed). You're absolutely right, you definitely don't need to!
Even though we were joking about Kaneko's celtic designs a while ago, don't feel pressured to make their origins clear every time either, if you do want to just design a Fomorian that doesn't have any hints at all of being celtic, please just do so!
Oh, so you're tackling them next? Fine choices!
I have no idea how Hagen should be designed, he's just so obscure... I have no idea why Kaneko's looks the way it does either, even though I like it a lot. Maybe a brooding, dark and edgy nordic soldier should just do the trick? Sometime in the future I would like to try tackling a Siegfried design based around on all those old illustrations of him where he just wears a pelt, almost like a wild man. [here] [here] [here]
I just have to figure a way to do that without making him look like a lame caveman or something out of cheap porn...
And yeah, just by the fact that they're humans means you have to compensate by giving them nice looking clothes (Yeah... Even shoes I guess ), while a monster just needs to look monstrous for the design to look good.
I'm not sure either actually, I have a lot of ideas in mind and not a lot of time to draw them... I actually already have a new design ready, and that would be...Mokoi .
But a few friends of mine brought to my attention how much he resembles the "Crystal Skull " enemy from Persona 5, so I'm thinking about redesigning him.

DoctorChevlong In reply to AtmaFlare [2018-05-13 07:00:26 +0000 UTC]

For Hagen, I'm going to base his outfit on burgundian armors, and I'll give him a helmet adorned with friggin' bat wings ! I'm really tempted to give him an unnatural skin tone, like Kaneko's version (after all, in some versions, Hagen is a descendant of the dwarf Alberich, so he's not completely human )
I knew you would include Arthur Rackham's Siegfried in your inspirations I'm going to keep the reddish skin, since he bathed in Fafnir's blood, it makes sense I'm not going to give him much protections on his upper torso, since he became invulnerable after his dragon blood bath (he could still have a shield attached to his back, to protect his only weak point)...
Aah, lil' Mokoi ! He's an obscure one, too ! Well, take your time trying to find a better design !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtmaFlare In reply to DoctorChevlong [2018-05-14 03:35:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh nice! I say you should go for an unnatural skin tone! To emphasize both his half-dward heritage and to spice the design a little bit!
He's also supposedly one-eyed in some accounts, so you can work with that as well.
Yup, if I were to design Siegfried, I would go for the same route as you! At first, I was thinking of making my own completely drenched in blood, as if he had just emerged from bathing in it, but that would make things waaaaaay too gory, so I'm unsure of what to do for now...
If not drenched, a reddish skin tone just like SMT for sure!
I'll probably only change the skull on the bottom of Mokoi's design, but for now I'm still unsure of what to do exactly.... But it should be here soon, or so I hope.

Me too! I love how disfigured Fenrir's looks in that original illustration , really makes him look like some sort of giant abomination, and the crazed eyes are a huge part of that for me. Originally I was just going to put a normal wolf skull in there, but I liked the eyes so much I wanted to include it as well!
....You're actually one of the first people to ever praise my anatomy in anything at all I'm glad, thanks a lot!
...Just don't try to analyze it too much, you'll start to really see all the flaws in it. I'm really hoping you guys won't notice them as it is. >w>''
