Description History:
The Robotech Defense Force, commonly known as the RDF, was the primary military defense arm of the United Nations Government and the New United Nations Government. The RDF can trace its roots to the original United Nations Defense Forces that had participated in the Unification Wars. In June 2000, world leaders banded together to reveal the existence of extraterrestrials, following the discovery of a crashed alien space battleship designated Alien StarShip One (ASS-1) a year prior. This announcement brought about unrest and conflict as fear of an impending intergalactic war spread around the world. Several nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth of Independent States, Japan, Germany, and France, drafted plans to reorganize the United Nations into a singular unified world government, so that humanity will be better prepared for possible contact with aliens.

In January 2001, a loose alliance of rogue nations opposed to the creation of a centralized global government formed the Anti-Unification League, which would result in the outbreak of the Unification Wars. However, despite heavy criticism, the United Nations Government was officially established, as was its armed forces, the United Nations Defense Forces. Compared to the former UN Peacekeeping Forces, the UNDF was given far more power, allowing the UN to respond to regional conflicts and natural disasters far more efficiently.

The UNDF was initially divided into four branches: the UN Army, the UN Navy, the UN Air Force, and the UN Spacy.

By the mid-2000s, the UNDF were operating in the public eye, but their primary mission was to serve as the spearhead of the UN's planetary defense program in preparation for alien warfare. Publicly, the UNDF mostly saw action as a peacekeeping force in the few remaining regional conflict and, more importantly, they fought frequent battles against the forces of the Anti-Unification League that sought to resist the United Nations Government and its influence in global politics throughout the Unification Wars from 2001 to 2007. Meanwhile, through the development of the alien technology found in the ASS-1, dubbed "Robotechnology", experimental new weapons are created, such as the Veritechs, the Destroids, and other space-faring weapon platforms. Many of these Robotech weapons would be utilized by the UNDF in covert missions against Anti-UN forces during the later years of the Unification Wars. In January 2007, the Unification Wars ended in UN victory, though many Anti-UN resistance groups remained to disrupt the peace.

With the Unification Wars at an end, the reconstruction project of the ASS-1 continues steadily on the South Pacific island of Macross Island, and the ship renamed the Super Dimension Fortress (SDF-1) Macross. The United Nations Government forms an elite semi-autonomous division within the UNDF, known as the Robotech Defense Force (RDF), with it being centered around the SDF-1 on Macross Island. The RDF was charged with being the UN's vanguard force, its mission to serve as the Earth's first and final line of defense in a potential large-scale alien invasion with the SDF-1 as their planned flagship. Throughout 2008 to 2009, the RDF's assets included the SDF-1 Garrison on Macross Island, their main headquarters in Alaska Base, military outposts on Earth, Luna, and Mars, squadrons of Veritech Fighters and other mecha, and several capital ships and space stations in orbit.

Though the initial Zentraedi invasion of 2009 was kept a secret from the general public, with the disappearance of Macross Island being blamed on a thermonuclear attack by Anti-UN terrorists, it did put the RDF into the forefront of planetary defense, while the SDF-1 crew valiantly fought against Zentraedi and Meltrandi forces in the major battles of the First Robotech War in space.

In 2010, the Zentraedi Grand Fleet's planetary bombardment of Earth, which heavily decimated the planet's surface, dealt a major blow to the UN and RDF. In general, the most senior officers left were those who had been aboard the SDF-1 during the attack or had been in heavily fortified facilities that managed to escape direct attack. After the First Robotech War, the RDF was at the vanguard of the relief and reconstruction efforts and was the de facto global military force as a large majority of the UNDF had been devastated in the Rain of Death. Between maintaining order and battling rogue Zentraedi elements, the RDF was vary busy for most of the next decade.

The RDF's last major action was as a counter-terrorism force during the Malcontent Uprisings (2012-2015). After this period, the Army of the Southern Cross began to take control of planetary military operations, leaving the RDF to prepare for its new off-world mission to Tirol and Optera in order to prevent hostilities with the Robotech Masters and the Invid, so Earth and its people wouldn't be caught in another Robotech War. By 2023, the majority of RDF assets had been transferred to the Robotech Expeditionary Forces (REF) or the SDF-3 Pioneer Mission. After the SDF-3's departure from Earth, only a handful of RDF troops and mecha remained on Earth, reporting to the New United Nations Government.

Organization:
The RDF was initially one part of the larger UN Defense Forces. While the majority of the UN forces were national military groups from member nations assigned to UN roles, the United Nations Defense Forces was the only one that answered solely to the UN and not to an individual member nation. With the formation of the United Nations Government, the armed forces of the member nations were slowly being unified under a single command as well, with the idea that they would all form part of the larger Robotech Defense Force. This all became irrelevant after the Rain of Death in 2010 when most of the world's governments were wiped out. During the Reconstruction period and the reemergence of the United Nations as the New United Nations, the RDF became the sole global military force, under the control of the New UN.

The RDF follows a command hierarchy inherited from its days as an UN peacekeeping military force. Initially, the UNDF ultimately answered to the UN Security Council, via the special task group assigned to the SDF-1 Reconstruction Project. With the end of the Unification Wars, the RDF was originally formed as a new division of the UNDF and it now reported to the Defense Minister of the Security Council. Control of the RDF generally fell to the senior flag officers that were part of RDF High Command. Under High Command,  the RDF was broken down into specific divisions based on specializations such as the Ground Force, the Air Force, the Naval Force, and the Space Force, as well as technical divisions like Communications, Research and Development, Engineering and Military Intelligence.

After the First Robotech War and under the direction of the New United Nations Government, RDF High Command was also recreated,  though many of the senior flag officers had been killed amidst the chaos of the Rain of Death and had to be replaced. During Reconstruction, the RDF was the sole military force so an additional level of senior command was created with groups responsible for control of RDF assets in the various geographic regions of the Earth (as well as the Space Force responsible for orbital and extra-planetary operations).
