Kind of an ad, kind of a reference. Its essentially what Danny looks like when the SOA takes over.For those who don't know, SOA is sudden onset aggression. It is a disease that affects the brain in emotion and memory.

Also do your Mers has a craw(similar to a bird) where they can store additional food in case of long treks?

Does this SOA cause a potential risk for his own mate and offspring? Or would his attachment to them cause a resistance to the SOA affects?

ItΒ very well does hold a potential risk and the problem it causes will come more into light with the next arc of the story. It was the reason his mother drove him from home.

Just wondering too, is it normal for his jaw to split open that wide, or is that another side effect of the SOA that results in self injury and tissue damage?

It's actually normal. Mers have very large jaws compared to humans, which is why they can swallow fish whole despite their similar appearance to us. The muscles surrounding the jaw pull back giving them better use of their teeth and jaw to bite and hold onto prey. The membrane in the back is an extra connective tissue, like a tendon which strengthens their bit with it's snap back.

Its genetic and there's no cure. It can only be bred out of a population.

SOA isn't a common illness in mers, but there are still other illnesses that invoke similar coloring or faded colors followed by unusual to aggressive behavior. So we may see another in the future
