Description For too long my old 030C sprites have been dogged by colors that would blind, well, a dog. D: So, again taking a cue from and his beautiful recent French locomotive sprites, I have given my 030Cs a much-needed pallet revamp for a more pleasant presentation.  And also animations.  Because you know.

1-pixel-to-the-inch scale, of course!  The original sprite can be found here atticus-w.deviantart.com/art/W… , but... don't look.

Okay, 030C is epic.  030C ANIMATED is even more epic, but damnit the stephensons!  It's all glued together!  I wish you had told me of this problem, I would have loved to animate the steph for you!

I know I know, but I simply had to draw the line somewhere (no pun intended)-- and besides, I'm kind of a fan of finding manageable solutions for overly-complicated problems (it's the modeler in me...).

(Of course since you're such a fan of Stephenson's animations, and I know that you are, you are more than welcome to outdo me with an outside Stephenson's'd loco sprite of your own... XD )

The green livery gives me the happies. I also see you pulled a SMR with faux allen-link-spinning...

These huge animations are awesome though.

Heh, thanks, yay. Well, I pulled a RT3, anyway-- if SMR did the same thing, I didn't know about it. XD I thought it was a clever solution to a trying problem-- it gives the valve gear the appearance of complicated movement at first glance without being bogged down in a technical animation quagmire. XD

The PLM 2-4-2 in SMR has allen motion that simple moves up and down. RRT3 has zero valve gear movement of any kind. XD

Atticus-W In reply to Sampug394 [2014-08-11 01:27:27 +0000 UTC]

Most engines in RT3 had rather clever centered valve gears EXCEPT for the Crampton, which had its outside Stephenson's valve gear animated as if it were a side rod, exactly as I have done here.

I'll have to check out this SMR 121...

I rather like the look of French locomotives, the exposed piping, etc gives a sort of "ugly cute" look...like they know how to look good, AND look ready for serious work; British locomotives just seem boring to me as far as aesthetics, everything is too smooth and hidden.

Atticus-W In reply to PanzerschreckLeopard [2014-08-10 19:08:40 +0000 UTC]

"Ugly cute"... now there's a new phrase that describes French locomotives very well, I think.  In fact I'm not sure of a country off the top of my head that had locomotives more beautifully ugly than France.

PanzerschreckLeopard In reply to Atticus-W [2014-08-11 00:11:36 +0000 UTC]

It just seems to be a good look on a plate-framed locomotive...hiding everything away like Brits did (How the fuck do they fit FOUR valve-gears between the frames with their puny loading gauge?) just makes it seem too toy-like to me. (With bar framed engines, I like it either way)

Veronicathehedgedog [2014-08-10 04:07:54 +0000 UTC]

how come some of the tenders have 4 wheels with the same engines that have 6?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Atticus-W In reply to Veronicathehedgedog [2014-08-10 05:06:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, locomotive tenders weren't always considered permanent equipment. Many engines were assigned two or more tenders during their life times, sometimes trading tenders with other engines or taking leftover tenders from engines that were scrapped.  In real life these particular 0-6-0s operated for about 100 years and I'm fairly certain that during that time frame some of the engines were given new tenders along with various other typical repairs and modifications.  Regarding my above sprites, the six-wheel tender is based on a known design, while the four-wheel tender is freelanced based on typical early French tenders.
