Not being a habitual reader of EqD, I didn't know about the Applejack Appreciation Day until I saw Harwicks' work ( www.deviantart.com/art/A-Healt… ) (and luckily) in the very beginning of the day. But I think still need to receive some spanking as punishment...just don't be too harshDue to the time limitation, I can't draw something elaborate. But somehow, a simple, yet wondrous apple does represent my admiration for Applejack.
I still remember the very first thing an art teacher who inspired me quite a lot in my young age was to discover the colourfulness and touch of an "ordinary" apple, which I would have painted all-red without thought. By then, I can realize the yellow and green and other colours which blend in a red apple or other things. Even though apples are such a common fruit, they have a special place in our daily life. A humble yet remarkable fruit.

This picture looks surprisingly realistic.
Sure, the art style isn't photorealistic, yet she still looks very alive! You can't help but get the impression that the only reason she's not moving is because she's transfixed by the apple, and that you could reach out and pet her...

Love this piece! Such a cute Applejack is a treasure for any gallery... and she now honors my desktop.
There are two things that I would say really make this picture - the adorable expression, and the style/use of texture. First, that expression is just perfect. The youthful face bursts with inquiry and admiration of the shiny apple before her. The puffed-up cheeks are very cute, the rounded nose/snout is adorable, and that hint of the smile peaking above the table gives the impression of a huge grin. All of this gives emotional value to this piece, makes the viewer really just want to keep studying the expression. Finally, those giant eyes give her expression such a joyous intensity, filled with light and reflections of the apple.
The other thing that really makes this picture perfect is the style of the piece. This would look good, but not nearly so great as a flat-shaded vector, or even a normal shaded piece. The texture from you brush adds a huge amount to the piece. This texture makes the wood look like wood, gives her mane the impression of hair, and makes Applejack look fuzzy. The strokes also help direct the viewer's eyes from the background to the apple and Applejack.
These are by no means the only things you did in this piece, but I feel they are the most important for what makes this so good. But you also have great lighting, great use of colors to unify the piece and to add interest to the apple and Applejack's eyes, and great choice of positioning and size. Even if less noticeable, all these little things add up and help make this picture so great. Great job!
