Description

Reflection; A serious thought or consideration, or an image seen in a mirror or a shiny, reflective surface. A jumble of meanings for a jumble of thoughts ever plaguing human kind. The power of reflection to both evaluate oneself and the world around you is a power essential to survival, but is one not appreciated enough by those it was gifted to due to its nature of being a two sided coin…

The light of the day was faded now, the sunset long finishing with dusk now in full swing, giving way to the night. The sun had set early today, too early for many, and would continue to allow night to take over sooner as the months rolled on and Winter knocked on Autumns door. The reds and golds of the tree leaves littering the ground were all now painted the same greys and dark blue hues in the absence of light. The animals of the day had long since fallen to rest, now handing over control to the nocturnal creatures for yet another long, cold night. Birdsong had ended, replaced with the occasional screech of an owl. The cheers and chatter of humans now replaced with an eerie silence accompanied by the slight rusting of leaves. The bright moon that hung above was one of the only sources of light now left. Except for a small star that continued to flicker between the trees. Reflection.

Alone they usually travelled, wandering near and far across the mortal realm around them. Drifting slowly with their toes almost dragging across the floor the lonesome feeling would leave a trail of mist wherever they travelled. Small dustings of starlight and sparkles graced the paths he followed to light up the world again for just a small moment longer, to see the colours as they once were a few hours previous when the sun was still ruler of the sky. However, Reflection did not look though. Their head hung low and their eyes remained shut, refusing to look at the physical world. He was not interested in simple matters of leaves changing on trees, nor the soon to be wintertime and the chill that hung in the air. He was too focused on the echoes.

Echoes drifted and clung to places and things, much like dust on a mantle or seeds to an animals coat. Echoes of memories. Of feelings. Little snippets of time that were precious to the ones whom experienced them. Some were delightful and full of colour, love, and life. Some were simpler, born of tranquility and inner peace. Many however were ones of darkness, with fear all encompassing and screams ringing clear. Most places were littered with them all. A favourite memory to some were the undoing of others. But all of them were nonetheless precious. Regardless of rights of wrongs committed, they made a human whomever they were. Like one of those hand made quilts passed down through a family, each impeccable stitch and every piece of torn thread was an important tale to be told, and it all held the finished product together. Every memory was a true reflection of every human it was made by.

Reflection focussed on these echoes, going out at night where they were much easier to find, collecting them piece by piece. He would watch them first, understanding what kind of memory he was dealing with, and then when he was finished he would absorb it, weaving it into the fabric of his cloak. The memory altered the cloak depending on its type. A bad memory woven would become a small dark stain on the lighter sections, looking much like a tear drop had fallen and dyed it slightly. Each tear drop would fade with time as a memory became less painful to its owner but it was a reminder that all wounds can heal and while there was light, there was always a chance to experience a darkness.

The good memories however had a far happier home. Woven into the dark patches, each happy and fond memory would become a star in the pulsing night sky of the cloaks design. It would swirl and glow delightfully as nights rolled on but eventually, just as the bad ones do, the good would also fade. When a memory was truly coming to its end, a final send off in the form of a piece of starlight would occur, falling away in the trail of mist to light up the world one last time, to be forever lost on the plains of time.

Truth be told though, not all was good with the feeling himself. The echoes meant that good and bad were in a constant struggle, and instead of feeling the memories he collected, instead Reflection felt… nothing. Total apathy as he drifted endlessly through the world. He would occasionally go to Appreciation for advice, wondering how she managed to remain unchanged over her years of service to mother earth. She would smile and be as delightful as always, offering her answers happily. Every time he would accept the answer but feel unable to follow in her footsteps. Perhaps it was just the nature of their different existences. She could never grow out of her love of the world, and he would always be everlasting conflict with the good and bad that he could never truly be himself. But he knew that as long as she was around he could at least feel something. Appreciation. While he was a reflection of humanity, at least she would always be a true reflection of who she was.

And while the stars of his cloak would slowly fall away, he knew there was at least one star he could count on to never disappear.

------

It's a bit longer of a read this one, but once I started writing I couldn't stop... I had to chop a lot out so it wasn't too much xD It's a tad more serious but I wanted an opposite to appreciation. And if your wondering why the mix between 'they' and 'he' pronouns it's because I initially wanted this character androgynous but I couldn't write effectively with the 'they' pronouns so I decided to choose male pronouns for ease...

Anyway I hope you enjoy this OC of sorts, it'll be my second feeling of fall but I want to do emotions for the rest of the seasons too... it's good to have these as a base though

Your writing can be so enthralling and it flows beautifully! I like this one ALMOST as much as Appreciation xD probably because I've never been a sentimental person myself, so Reflection isn't a big part of who I am, at least not that I'm aware of. But it IS just as important and crucial to some people, and I can /appreciate/ that lmao. Either way I love this dude, and the whole cloak analogy was great! Another cool design Aura!

Aw thank you so much! Im glad you like the two of them, and the descriptions ^^ I guess i'm the other way round, probably way too sentimental than I should be lol.. It was difficult trying to make a description for reflection without going overboard. But I glad I followed up with another character you enjoyed ^^
