Description Size: 8 x 10"
Medium: Watercolor and Ink

This painting is based off of a character from one of my much older ACEO cards. Some of you may remember the duo of Aelita and Jax! I decided to do another painting featuring them because I love them so much. Aelita is a very beautiful witch who is part of the high witch and wizard elite. She is constantly concerned with presenting the proper image. Jax is her pink-winged cat who likes to play tricks (especially on Halloween!) which annoys Aelita to no end. But Aelita is never seen without her Jax.

I was influenced by an art style that I admire so much: Art Nouveau. I decided to create a very detailed background almost to mimic a wrought iron gate or fence. Can you find all the hidden images that I placed in the background? Then, also with the Art Nouveau style, I placed a circular border behind Aelita and Jax with a pumpkin patch and a green mosaic frame. Behind them within the circle is a spooky graveyard scene and a beautiful orange and purple sky!

This was probably my all time favorite piece to work on. I really hope that you all enjoy it!

MelissaDawn In reply to Aurella [2007-09-05 01:37:30 +0000 UTC]

It's true!!! They'd be perfect for a children's book. Do you ever make prints bigger than 5 by 7 for any of them? I love Cassia, I'd love to hang her on my wall! Oh, and congrats on the cross stitch designs, that's so cool

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aurella In reply to MelissaDawn [2007-09-07 12:40:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!! I'm really thrilled and excited about the cross stitch site. The artists and the owner over there are all fantastic.

And I tend to do larger prints of my smaller pieces on a case by case basis. I always worry about blowing up smaller pieces because of the quality, so I don't think I'll offer them in my store. But the quality actually isn't that bad. I just recently sold six 5 x 7 prints that were blown up from 2.5 x 3.5." A lady requested them for her daughter's sixth birthday! I think the only difference is that you can see the oopsies a little bit better...like the subtle ink splatters and things like that that aren't noticeable in the smaller versions. But if you are interested in a bigger print, just send me a note or an email or something and I can print one off to see what it looks like and send you a scanned version of the print to see if it's suitable for you!

Thanks so much!

Well that's really cool, and it's great the artists and owner are so nice. Congrats again!

So how come you always paint ACEO size? I would think that would be so hard, your paintings are more detailed than most!!! Congrats too on that lady wanting 6 prints too! Must feel good to sell them I definitely want a print of Cassia one of these days, 5 by 7 would be fine... right now I'm waiting desperately for my stupid student loan. When I actually have money again, I will let you know!

Aurella In reply to MelissaDawn [2007-09-10 12:18:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much Melissa!! And definitely no pressure on Cassia. I totally understand about student loans. I graduated in March and my grace period is over at the end of this month uggggggh. Not looking forward to forking over 400 dollars every month for like...the rest of my life lol. Ridiculous!!

And I only paint in ACEO sometimes. I've been trying to do some bigger pieces as well, but the ACEOs tend to generate the most traffic/views/bids on eBay! Plus they are a little bit faster to do than the bigger pieces. But I'm trying to do a mix right now!

Thanks again for your kind words!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaDawn In reply to Aurella [2007-09-11 09:49:39 +0000 UTC]

Ugggh seems like everyone has student loans these days!!! It truly makes it impossible to be a professional artist, since it's hard enough to make a living in art without all those huge loans. Did you get your degree in art, or something else?

It's crazy how ACEOs are the big seller these days, in some ways I understand it, but I like having bigger pictures for myself! I'm just really amazed you can make your paintings so detailed, I would have thought you had to do them huge and then shrink them. I can't wait to see what you do with a big piece! And you're welcome, it's true, I just adore your painting style and characters

Aurella In reply to MelissaDawn [2007-09-12 13:40:38 +0000 UTC]

Aww thank you!! I got my degree in Game Art and Design. My initial plan was to be a texture artist, because I started out as a digital artist. But seeing as I live in Georgia and not California or something, that made it really difficult to find a job out of college. So I decided to try my hand at selling my art! What are you majoring in?

And yes, it is crazy how ACEOs are big sellers! I think they're popular with a lot of the big collectors, because I guess you can only have so many big pictures on your walls! And I do cheat a bit with my ACEOs a bit lol. I start out drawing at 5 x 7, because there's no way I can sketch that little. I've always been a big sketcher. Then I ink it on tracing paper, scan it into the computer and shrink it down! But from there everything's done to size like the inking, painting, etc....! I used to be silly and did full characters which was nuts. Like on my Rose piece...that was definitely the hardest one. Her face was so tiny. Now I try to stick to just the thighs up so as not to stress myself out too much lol.

And I'm trying to do a few more bigger pieces here and there! This one "Aelita and Jax" is an 8 x 10. I can't imagine doing this one any smaller with all the detail lol. Kamaria, Malana, Stella, and Edeline are all 5 x 7. And I'm working on a pirate mermaid right now that's going to be an 8 x 10!! It's sort of frustrating though, because I feel they are much better paintings than the ACEOs, but I can't seem to move them as fast or for as much! Oh well lol.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm just thrilled you enjoy my style and characters.

Wow! That's so funny, I totally started out doing digital art as well, and switched to traditional only recently. Not that I don't REALLY miss the undo button It stinks that most of the game art stuff is limited to So Cal, my fiance's brother and sister's boyfriend go to the same school in Nor Cal for animation, but they might have to move down to So Cal to get a job. It's so awesome you're brave enough to start selling your art instead!!! I really do love it, I hope everyone else does too and you get rich I majored in History in college, and am getting my Master's in Library Science right now. I'm so mad I didn't start doing art until last June, I missed out on so many years of practice and art classes! I have to work as a librarian or something for a few years when I'm done to pay off my loans, but once my fiance and I have kids (at least two years after we get married) I hope to be able to focus on art full time and stay home with the kids. Stupid loans!

Still, it's crazy how much work goes into your ACEOs! I know some artists who do them because they can do them so much faster than other paintings... but yours are so detailed!! I love Aelita and Jax, I can see why that one had to be 8 by 10. I know, I hate how long paintings take! It's so fun, then after a while you just want to imprint what's in your head on the canvas so you can move on to the next one. I can't wait to see the pirate mermaid, that sounds great! I still have to go through my devwatch messages, so hopefully you've got some new ones up How have things been going? Is it still summer in Georgia?

Hi Melissa!! Wow that's crazy that you started out as a digital artist too. There's something so wonderful about traditional art though that digital art can never replace. I'm happy to see that us watercolor artists aren't being overlooked too much because of digital artists. Traditional art still seems very popular!

And wow! You've only been painting for a little over a year?? You do such excellent work! And being a stay at home mom and a full time artist is my plan at some point too! lol

Thank you for your comments about my ACEOs! I do spend a lot of time on them, but I enjoy doing them. Things have been going well! I have a few more licensing thingys in the works with a couple different companies, so that's exciting. And it still is summer in Georgia! It got a little cooler, but now it's hot again. And I hope you get rich too! lol

I know what you mean, I didn't understand why people felt that way until I started doing traditional art... though I really miss that undo button! It frustrates me when photomanipulations always beat out traditional art in DA contests, but I think you're right, people still appreciate traditional art, maybe because it's getting rarer! We can hope, right?

Aw thanks I'm always happy with my current work... for at least a day. Then all I can see are the flaws, and I want to paint something new and better. Grr! Do you ever have that problem? Stay at home mom + professional artist = endless stress and no sleep, but it sounds great *crosses fingers for both of us*

Oh, and a huge congrats on more licensing thingys in the works!!! That's so exciting!!! Yay!

Aurella In reply to MelissaDawn [2007-09-30 14:00:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!! Yes, I do have problems with noticing all of my flaws after I finish a painting. But you know, I think the artist is the only one to notice those flaws. The other day I was showing someone a painting of mine, and I somehow drew it and painted it...spent probably 10+ hours staring at it and failed to realize that you should be able to see her other arm and I didn't draw it!! Now what's all I can see when I look at it, but when I was showing it to a couple other people, they were like "I never would have noticed that had you not pointed it out to me." And I think a lot of flaws that the artist notices are like that. We are the biggest critics of our work after all!

MelissaDawn In reply to Aurella [2007-10-03 00:58:52 +0000 UTC]

LOL I loved the missing-arm story, that's so funny. It's true though, you're probably the one person who would notice that! It makes me feel better that all artists seem to feel the same way about their work... though it's frustrating!!! Can't our paintings just be perfect already???

Thank you so much!! I'm so glad that you think the colors highlight the witch. I was struggling a lot when I went to paint in the colors since the border was so bold and striking. I didn't quite know how to make the witch the focal point with all of that darkness around the border. So I'm really happy that she sticks out!
