Description Not much is known about how they evolved. Cheveyo is the one who created the six dragon species of Costinua and surrounding lands. But one thing is sure, butterfly dragons are NOT one of the six. So where did they come from?

Some say these dragons were created by Shivani, the goddess of life and death, others say they came from an enchanted gemstone. And still others say these mini dragons just evolved from normal butterflies, but really, how could a dragon (a reptile) come from a butterfly (an insect)?!

The most likely answer is that they just shouldn't be questioned and be admired for their beautiful wings and big adorable eyes!

Butterfly dragons are most commonly found in the forest. Occasionally an Earth dragon, or a Fire dragon will take one in as a pet, but this is not a good idea, because Butterfly dragons are very different from other dragons. They need to live in very specific ways in order to survive.

These little dragons are great to look at, but when handling one, you must be very careful because their wings are nearly exactly like butterfly wings and are very fragile. You should also take caution of their little mouths. They have tiny, but very sharp fangs that can and will inject venom into its victim. The poison is said to be non lethal to humans and larger dragons, but it will easily kill their prey which mostly consists of flies, moths, ants, and sometimes cicadas. If you are bitten by one, wash and wrap the wound to avoid infection. And although the venom is non lethal to larger animals, it will be a very painful experience.

Butterfly dragons are omnivores. They have long, thin whip-like tails which they use to knock flying insects out of the air. Their wings cannot move very fast so their long tails help them to catch insects that fly much faster than them. The insect will fall to the ground dead or nearly dead after being hit with the lethal tail. The dragon will sometimes be able to catch the falling insect before it hits the ground, but it usually just watches for the spot where the insect has landed then goes and retrieves it. The tail can also simply grab the prey, which the dragon then pulls to it's mouth and bites it with the fangs, killing the insect almost instantly. These dragons are completely immune to the venom so they can just eat the poisoned bug. Other than bugs and insects, butterfly dragons also use their long tongue to drink the nectar out of certain flowers.

Butterfly dragons are not nearly as intelligent as the larger dragons. For one, they cannot speak the traditional language of the dragons, nor can they really speak much at all... of any language. Β Instead of intelligent speech, Butterfly dragons communicate to each other through chirps, squeaks, and clicks. Butterfly dragons simply haven't become civilized like the larger dragons of the main continent. In ways they are like the Gemstone dragons who used to live on the main continent but moved along with the Metal dragons to an island that is really only big enough to hold one of the two tribes. Aaaaaaanywaaaays back to the butterflies! Butterfly dragons, like the Gemstones, tend to admire themselves... a lot. Their wings come in a wide range of colours, patterns, and even shapes! Their bodies are usually brown or black, but they are occasionally dark blue, purple, or green. The body of a Butterfly dragon is very slender, and they have long noodly arms and legs (they only have two arms and two legs). They have medium length necks, and the snout of a butterfly dragon is long and thin, it looks somewhere in between that of a Gemstone and a Water dragon.

During mating season, male dragons will put together a ring of colourful flowers on the forest floor. He will then stand in the middle of his ring and puff himself up to look bigger, he will also open a set of webbed frills just behind his jaw and cheek. Only males have the frills. The frills of the male dragon are able to shift colours and the males with the brighter, most colourful displays are the most likely to be chosen as a mate by a female. Once they have the attention of a female, he will do a small solo dance with large exaggerated sweeping motions of the wings, tail, and arms. During this display he will also constantly shift the colours on his frills, and at seemingly random intervals he will close and open the frills rapidly. If the female steps into his ring of flowers, he will pick up one of those flowers and give it to her. The female then joins the dance, bonding with the male. You can infer the next part.... Then two to three weeks later, the female lays between six and ten eggs in a small nest made from flower petals and mud. These nests are made exclusively by the male and they are made either on the side of a tree or underneath an overhang of rock. The eggs will hatch after six weeks. The mother is able to sense when the eggs are about to hatch and she will go to retrieve food for the hatchlings. Unlike the large dragons, Butterfly dragons do not stay with their young. The mother brings back the food for the babys' first meal then she departs. The baby dragons are extremely tiny when they first hatch. The hatchlings rely on each other to survive until they are adults; they sleep together in the nest until they outgrow it when they are about two months old. At two months, the dragons move to live in the higher branches of evergreens. The hatchlings will hunt and live together until they are about a year old. At two years, the now adult butterfly dragons will also be ready to mate. Butterfly dragons usually live between four and six years.

I love how you were able to merge the mystical and realistic parts of him, if I didn't know better I would believe this is something found in nature. Your proportions are pretty good too! The only thing I would truly work on is the shadowing.....you don't have a lot of extreme lights and darks (at least In my opinion) and that makes the picture look washed out. OH! Yeah! I forgot to mention, I absolutely love the expression on the dragons face! It really makes the Dragon seem...real!

Thank you.

And about the shadows, I will be colouring this piece and I usually shade the coloured drawing. I also should retake the photo...

I appreciate this critique. I will definitely try to work hard on the shadowing of the final drawing.
