In nearly all timelines, Elk and Wiki spend a long time in stasis, sealed in a protective cocoon.

Here’s A Bunch of Info:
(prior note: Wiki was created to be a supertemporal entity that exists across time. They can experience the past and future as part of it, able to act while in that time. Though the memories of that time have the strongest influence, so it's not always obvious that their experience is nonlinear. In addition, multiple timelines are very possible, though Wiki only experiences them if they're actively looking. Under normal circumstances, their experience remains in a consistent timeline.)

Wiki is immune to the Infection, and by entanglement, Elk is as well. But at some point, after Elk is already mostly grown, the Radiance (or something else…?) presses on their mind, more as she realizes the kind of threat they could pose.

Since Wiki was made to collect and preserve knowledge, all of their knowledge, memories, awareness began to self-seal to isolate and protect itself - Elk is included since they’re very entangled with Wiki’s existence at that point. If they separated completely it would have been… bad… for both of them. Also, Elk would not abandon Wiki to fall into oblivion alone, and Wiki would not abandon Elk to be infected.

And then they fall asleep. This is where many paths diverge.

Beings of void (like vessels) are able to slip inside the infinite void of the cocoon - it’s a large, black, empty space until you reach the “center,” where Elk hangs in some semblance similar to the Hollow Knight, bound by spells and void. Gravity, space, and time are all strange in this space. Those with a dream nail or a connection to them could enter their dream - where Elk (and Wiki within) lay sleeping in the center of an array, surrounded by sealed fragments of knowledge.

( In most timelines, Heart [ heart-the-vessel ] comes to visit them, giving gifts, hoping for them to wake up. But it takes a long, long time. Years. But the first thing they see when they wake is them surrounded by shinies, and one of the first things they remember is Heart.)

In the game timelines, I’m thinking Ghost (by Dream Nail) or whatever caused Ghost to come (the rising of the Infection) awakened them.

Their minds unseal gradually even after they wake, so it takes a bit to remember everything.

But eventually they do, and Elk and Wiki are more entangled than ever. Both of them are now supertemporal entities, rather than just Wiki.
