Description Elf Shaman

...she breathed deeply, smelling the rain in the morning air. It was so still, so quiet, as though the entire forest was holding its breath, waiting for her to begin. Standing on the lake's edge, she gripped the Faeriewood tightly and closed her eyes. the chant flowed softly from her lips, conjuring a myst from the otherworld. it brushed against her, filled her with majiks. still chanting she began to walk onto the lake, the water rippling under her feet. gracefully she began to dance on the water, all the while chanting, calling to the spirits in the forest, asking them for help...

My entry for *Lisajen-stock 's fairy contest. i cant draw fairys to save my life...wings just arent my forte...so i did an elf.

I certainly like the pose and expression. I am not 100% convinced by the pose of the legs, though.

hey, I entered in this contest too, I did a fairy though. Wings are so much fun!

this looks really wonderfull, you're going to get a prize for sure! I like the original take on elves, y'know, without all the long flowy dresses and huuuuuge pointy ears, the tatts are really cool.
Good luck!

oohh..did you? can you link me to your entry? i think i watched you after you submitted it or something. XD i really wanted to do a fairy to start off with - a fairy shaman - but with the wings the whole thing looked crowded. then i wanted her standin on the water conjuring up a spell with two fairys dancing around her...but they just kept coming out terribly wrong..and wings made them worse. so i gave in and left it like this. i mean, i am proud of the amount of time and attention i put into it...but i am dissapointed i couldnt complete the idea.

thankyou for the lovely comment. i dont really mind floofy, sterotype elves, but i much prefer original concepts. and in my head, a shaman elf would be more tribal and in tune with nature and wouldnt busy his/herself with floofyness and stereotypical stuff.

you are most welcome for the comment!

Here's my submission: [link]

I put it in intermediate... yeah. Wings are fun to experiment with
I'm actually quite proud of this drawing, I approached it in a couple of different ways. I tried to do the right thing and start with the anatomy, like first structure, then muscles, then flesh and clothing, but it didn't work so I just went freehand, and it worked much better. There are a few things I'm not happy with, like her left shoulder and hand and the neck's too long (I think anyway) but I'm happy with the overall rendering.
Thanks for being interested, I hope you have fun on holiday

ah yeh i saw that one. its a really good job, you should be proud. bleh at the anatomy thing...i always stuff up when i work that way. all my free hands are much more flowing and the feel better.

i think its fine. the only issue i might have with it is the smudges around the paper..its one of the reasons i shudder when i start a pic. lol. but once i am done with a pic i go round with a kneaded eraser and clean up smudges, then when i scan it - if its still looking 'dirty' i will use photoshop to clean up the white. just gives it a better, professional look.

yeah lol, I try use paper to cover the rest while working on one thing, but as a complete amature, I don't have a kneaded eraser or photoshop lol, just dad's scanner. Thanks for the kindness

*psst* i dont do the paperthing. lol. i am an amature too...i didnt even KNOW about the paper thing for a long time. i used it a tiny bit on this one to cover the black dress coz it smudged so easy. as for not having a kneaded eraser, you can use any eraser, but if you have about $2 to spare, just grab a kneaded one from the newsagency..or art place..

I think, nnh, with your skills and attention to details and all, you may be able to fix a bit more details onto her left hand?

other than that it is pretty good. comparing with rest of your gallary pieces maybe a bit more over all polish.

which hand..like...her real left hand (the one with the sticks) or our left (the one under her face)? i think if your talking about the one with the sticks then i have to agree. i got a little lost on it because i didnt have a referance so i winged it. lol.

thankyou. this one definitly was trying to have a more polished, professional look.

Boqu In reply to AussieMum [2007-03-13 19:26:37 +0000 UTC]

yes, it is the one holding sticks I meant.

and if you don't mind, what is the meaning with the name? she doesn't look like elf, and I always think a shaman will have african or mayan sort of armor decorations.

AussieMum In reply to Boqu [2007-03-14 10:28:14 +0000 UTC]

well..she is an elf. shes got the pointy ears, but i didnt want her to look like your run-of-the-mill Tolkin elf. i wanted her to have a more earthy, tribal look. and i thought mayan too when i thought shaman, thats what the deal is with the black paint across her eyes. but i didnt want to get to busy with the image. simplicity can be a wonder sometimes. so..she is an Elf Shaman, an elf magician if you will.
