I’m really loving the whole Gumroad tutorial explosion, where a bunch of amazing concept artists and illustrators, some of which I've been following for years are finally sharing their process.

For a VERY reasonable price (commonly only about $5 or so), you get to keep a HD commentary process walk through, Photoshop brushes, toolsets and more from some of the best in the business.

This guy to the left was done while watching Anthony Jones’ “Painting with Confidence” tutorial. Started the thumbnail for him really small, like 100 pixels across, then blew it up and detailed it out. Added some quick basic colours at the end too.

A great way to do it and got a lot of new ideas from the tutorial, can't recommend looking into them enough.
