"We choose to go to the Moon! We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things. Not because they are easy, but because they are hard."
- John F. Kennedy, at Rice University, September 12, 1962
At the time of this posting, Artemis I has already completed its Trans-Lunar Injection burn and is on its way to orbit the Moon, paving the way for the return of humans to another celestial body for the first time since 1972.
I got this long exposure shot from Rotary Riverfront Park in Titusville, FL.
Despite the delays in planning the mission, the delays wrought by the coronavirus, and the technical issues that caused several launch scrubs, I'm so happy I got to see this happen with my own eyes. This is a seminal moment, not only for my generation, but for those that come after mine as well. I have spent many hours watching the Apollo-era broadcasts on YouTube listening to Walter Cronkite and Jules Berkman speak of the virtues of spaceflight and the promises discovery and exploration give to future generations, and now I feel that I know, if only a little, what it was like to watch the Saturn V rocket soar into the sky to the Moon, and in some ways, into the future of humanity.
The title I chose is the quote, paraphrased, from the NASA launch commentator at the moment of liftoff. It was wonderfully poignant and I couldn't have come up with anything more perfect.
