Description
Bedtime at the Kirkland Household always started with a bath. Arthur and his wife (y/n) took turns bathing the twins; tonight was his. The four year olds played with their tub toys. Their splashing and laughter floated down the hall to their bedroom, where (y/n) currently searched through the dresser. She smiled as she picked out two sets of pajamas, one for David, the other for Clara.

"Alright, you two," (y/n) heard Arthur say as he entered the bathroom. "Put the toys away."

"But Daddy!" cried David. "I'm not done!"

"Sorry, lad. It's time to get out."

David protested again, only to be silenced by Arthur's threat of there being no story if he didn't stop. (y/n) chuckled. It worked every time. She scanned the picture books for said story.

As (y/n) pulled a book off the shelf, she heard a loud splash, followed by an equally loud groan from Arthur. Her worries were confirmed by what came next.

"David!" Arthur yelled as he gave chase to the naked, dripping wet and still soapy boy. The child squealed and laughed as he dashed into the bedroom, beelining to his mother.

(y/n) rolled her eyes with a sigh. She turned around to look at her son, who hid behind her. He giggled quietly.

"Where is he?" Arthur hissed as he ran into the room.

"Um, he's--" (y/n) quickly hid her face behind the book and tried not to laugh. Her husband's front was completely drenched, including some of his blond hair. "Oh, dear," she said mid-giggle.

Arthur raised a bushy eyebrow. "Seriously, Love?"

“Sorry,” (y/n) said as she lowered the book. She bit her lip in an attempt to keep from laughing. “Want me to tend to Clara?”

Arthur’s emerald eyes fell on the trail of drips and soap that stopped behind his wife. He smirked, placing a finger to his lips. “Yes, please,” he said as he walked up to (y/n) “She needs her hair washed. And I’ll take care of /this/ little troublemaker.” Arthur gently tackled David to the floor, catching the boy by surprise. David squirmed in Arthur’s arms, still laughing at the “game” they were playing.

“Alright,” (y/n) said with worry. She hoped Arthur wouldn’t discipline their son too harshly.

(y/n) rinsed out Clara’s thick blond hair when she heard David cry out. “No! Dad, I’m sorry! I want a story!”

“I’m sorry too, son, but there’s still no story because of what you did.” Arthur’s voice was stern, yet gentle. “You know better than to splash like that.”

Clara fixed her sad green eyes on (y/n). “There’s no story, Mama?”

“Sounds like it,” (y/n) said softly. “David needs to learn his lesson.”

“Can you just read to me?” Clara suggested sweetly.

“No, but there’s is one thing I can do,” (y/n) said with a smile. She leaned in to whisper something in Clara’s ear. The girl beamed. “Wait until you’re all tucked in before asking your father, okay?”

“Yes, Mommy.”

(y/n) hoisted Clara out of the tub and bundled her up in a soft towel. Arthur came back with his miniature self, who was red faced and pouty. He placed David back in the tub to finish his bath. David’s green eyes fell on his mom. His little bottom lip began to quiver.

“I’m sorry, Mummy,” David said sadly.

“I know, sweetie,” (y/n) answered as she scooped up Clara. “I hope you learned your lesson.”

“I won’t do it again. Promise.”

(y/n) smiled. “That’s my boy.” She carried Clara to the bedroom.

Clara twirled in her Rapunzel nightgown before climbing onto her bed. (y/n) brushed out and braided back her hair, kissing her forehead afterwards. Arthur came in with David and got him dressed in his light blue, two-piece pajamas. He combed back his short hair before dropping him on the bed. David giggled, smiling happily as he crawled to the foot of the bed to give his dad a hug. Arthur smiled as he fixed the unruly blond locks, kissing David’s cheek.

“Time for bed, little ones,” Arthur declared. He pulled back David’s TARDIS covers and tucked him in. (y/n) did the same for Clara, pulling the white comforter with small pink and purple flowers up to her chin. Not long after Clara sat up.

“Daddy, can you and Mummy sing to us tonight?” she asked. “Since there’s no story.”

Arthur narrowed his eyes at (y/n), who smiled.

“Artie, we at least owe them that.”

Arthur sighed as a smile crept to his face. “Oh, alright.”

“Yay!” David and Clara cheered.

“Which song is it tonight?” Arthur asked Clara as he sat beside her. It was David who responded.

“The Hushabye one!” he requested.

“Yeah, that one!” Clara agreed.

(y/n) smiled down at David. “Good choice.”

Arthur took a moment to remember the words. It had been a while since he and (y/n) sang this lullaby to the twins. His baritone voice started singing softly to Clara.

“/A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain softly blows o’er Lullaby Bay. It fills the sails of boats that are waiting. Waiting to sail your worries away./”

Clara snuggled deep into her blankets as she listened to her Dad. He stroked her forehead while (y/n) continued on.

“/It isn’t far to Hushabye Mountain,/” (y/n) sang to David. He smiled during a yawn, plopping back down onto his pillow. “/And your boat waits down by the key. The winds of night, so softly are sighing. Soon they will fly your troubles to sea./”

Arthur’s voice joined (y/n)’s to the end of the lullaby. “/So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain. Wave goodbye to cares of the day. And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain sail far away from Lullaby Bay./”

Both Clara and David were breaths away from sleep. Arthur and (y/n) each kissed their children, wishing them a good night and sweet dreams. (y/n) stole a glance over her shoulder as she turned off the light, allowing their nightlights to glow softly. Her children were fast asleep.

“Shall I tuck you in too, Love?” Arthur whispered teasingly, wrapping his arms around (y/n)’s waist and planting a kiss on her neck.

(y/n) giggled as she turned in her husband’s embrace. “I’d like that,” she said with a smile.
