Description

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
-John McCrae, May 1915

Thank you very much for your crit - I really appreciate your feedback. Looking at some of the pieces from the Grateful Dead, I'm really flattered that you think this piece is reminiscent of the band's artwork...

I hope that I can continue to create pieces which have a comparable emotional impact. Thanks once again!

Completely nailed the crit on this piece. It is a mix between the Grateful Dead and the classic skeletal, anatomical art of Vesalius' "De Humani Corporis Fabrica".

A perfect, brooding mix!

If I could've given this piece more stars for impact, I would've gladly done so.Β  I ADORE monochromatic/duotone/tri-tonal pieces of art like this, especially ones with such an emotional impact as this!

I've found that most people who try this type of art either make it far too cliche or completely miss the mark, but this.....nails it.

I like the simplicity and the fact that the skeleton is wearing a plain uniform, as if suggesting it was the lowliest of soldiers suffering the most, hoping to make it alive, but often getting killed beyond recognition.Β
Just wondering about the arm, though... the bones look like its left hand, but I am not sure how could it be... Artistic freedom, perhaps?

Le Morte d'Canadian Corp. The pride of the North American side laid low in crimson pools as precursor to all those poppy fields blooming brightly before the boulevards ofΒ Passchendaele. No doubt the contemplative corpse reflects upon that promise of the war to end all wars. I think that theΒ fragranceΒ of the sanguinary flower unlikely serves as an effective opiate to deaden the pain of the past for this fellow who hasΒ allowed us the full portion, Β his last full measure of devotion, toΒ hopefullyΒ enhance our memory. I wonder if we do what we ought to allow him to lie quiet in a questionable crypt.Β

Your skeletal anatomy is solid overall - the cranium especially.

If you are looking for good reference material, and don't already know about it, Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy has great drawings. Β Of the whole body - so soft tissue as well, but the bones are also there (articulated and some separate, too). Β Great for joints, including the wrist.

Sorry... big, big nerd, here. Β I *love* the simplicity of the stylized wrist in this piece.

autumnicity In reply to DC-26 [2016-01-14 03:00:54 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard of that reference book before, but I will definitely be looking for it on my next trip to the bookstore. I'm always a sucker for useful resources.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I figured simplifying would make it blend in better to the piece as a whole, so I'm happy you like it.

DC-26 In reply to autumnicity [2016-01-14 03:22:23 +0000 UTC]

It's a medical school anatomy atlas - but Dr. Netter was, in many ways, an artist first, and then a physician. Β So he has a great eye for style as well detail - in addition to science/facts/etc. Β There are probably other books that target anatomy for artists more than that one. Β It's also in it's 6th edition now, so earlier editions are often not very expensive used.
