Description Sauraeetes aepysaurus is the greatest predator of Northern Avigonia, at least before molting season.
With a wingspan of at least 10 feet among adult males, and 6 to 8 feet among females, S. aepysaurus is the largest of a family of flying reptiles known as the Phyllolepidosaurs. The Phyllolepidosaurs are indigenious to the rainforests of Avigonia, and are capable of flight, with a plumage of thin, feather-shaped scales. These scales are usually shed all at once, as the Phyllolepidosaurs are also accomplished climbers, and are often strictly arboreal.
Here, we see an adult male pursuing a Phrygiacasuarius struthio through the Avigonian rainforest.

Actually, it's more of an Archaeopteryx-like lizard, as it has no true feathers, and has no beak.

Hey, I'm almost done with coloring that picture, Give me a link to the original - or I'll just have to find it in your gallery.

Excellent action shot; good work also on the coloring job. Rather than an eagle, though, your predatory critter makes me think of a more archaic archaeopteryx. I like the fact that this creature still has scales, rather than actual feathers.

Hence my other description catchphrase of it "being an Archaeopteryx on bull steroids."

I do love the colouring, and the detailing of the wing feathers.

"...is the greatest predator of Northern Avigonia, at least before molting season."

What happens after molting season?

avancna In reply to LesserKnownGalFriday [2004-12-06 16:00:01 +0000 UTC]

Come rainy season, they molt their flight-scales, and can no longer fly.
Sometimes, they fall victim to some of the larger indigenious sphingosaurs during their flightless, arboreal lifestyle.

Well, that's a shame for them. Though I know I would appreciate a time period wherein I could be confidant of parking out in the open and not returning to find my car encompassed by a "present" from one of them.

I figured that if I were to wait and try asking other people to color it, I'd never get it finished.
