Description As promised, a part of my human sketches! While browsing my sketchbooks I noticed I have a lot of my original animal characters drawn as humans, just for fun. So I put them in their own sketchdump because the other sketches are so numerous, it wouldn't fit in one sketchdump anyway! Humanizing my OCs helps me get some diversity in my humans, as my characters are from different nationalities and ages, plus it's fun to try and make them still resemble their original animal form a bit. These are the most recent ones, with the oldest from last July and the latest from last month. I numbered them so I can easily tell you who's who (though it would be absolutely fantastic if you could tell just by looking at them Won't judge you if you can't though!)

1. Tabitha, American tomcat with big eyebrow stripes. As a human, he's a well-built teenager (18/19 years old) with straw blonde hair and darker eyebrows. Well defined chin.
2. Mayra, (ancient) Egyptian mysterious cat. As a human, she has straight, thick black hair, well defined eyebrows and a milk-chocolate coloured skin. Her eyes are almond-shaped and her lips are full. Adult woman.
3. Madeleine, shy, insecure tortoiseshell cat. As a human, she has a round face and dark brown, thin hair, which is always messy and tangled up. Heavy eyelids and a slightly aquiline nose with a reclining chin. Skin is light, but tans easily in the summer.
4. Millie, Dutch energetic mouse (I always draw her as a child when human, though her actual age is more around 13/14 years). As a human, she'd have red hair and freckles, with a pale skin and blue eyes.
5. Akiko, Chinese red panda, also as a child (she should actually be 15 or so, but here she's younger). As a human, she has dark hair, which looks black but has a brown shine. Dark blue eyes and yellowish skin.
6. Esben, Scandinavian beech marten. He's the oldest of the bunch here, and not an image of beauty. As a human (and unlike the others, except Akiko, he actually does look like this when in human form: he is a trickster after all). He has brownish blonde hair, a sharp nose and thin lips with a reclining chin. Often has lines under his eyes. Rather slim built, not particularly muscular. Very clear cheekbones.
7. Mortimer the garden dormouse with no nationality. Again drawn as a kid (apparently I like drawing children. Who knew). Actual age is unknown, though late teens (18) is likely. Not here though. As a human, I imagine him to have big, round eyes which are deeply set in his skull, giving them dark shadows under his brows (which are black). A round nose and small chin and big ears. Hair is usually messy and has a brown colour, with some darker areas near the ears.
8. Sibirica the Russian Siberian weasel (hah). She's my favourite character to humanize, haha. She's very slim, with not as many curves on her body as, say, Mayra or Lamia would have. Long neck and a round face, with almond-shaped eyes and eyebrows that resemble dots. Her hair is yellowish red, more blonde than Millie's, but still red. Can have freckles. Nose is straight and the lips are small.

There you go, I hope you'll like these as much as my animals, even though I'm much less experienced and confident with drawing humans, I do enjoy it. So I will upload the other non-Oc humans too someday (which also includes quite a bit of fanart as I have a new rule that forces me to draw at least 2 characters of every new fandom I enter (since last summer). So expect some Supernatural, Fullmetal Alchemist and various others )

No references were used, I wanted to see what I could do on my own.

Art and characters are ยฉ to me, *Avanii

Ahh thank you! I'm so glad to hear, I'm always afraid my humans look stiff, especially compared to my animals...

I recognized Millie, Mayra, Mortimer and Sibrica, but the other ones was harder. Now that you tell their names, I can see it, though ^^ You're also very good at drawing humans.

I'm very happy to hear you got that far! I haven't got many pictures of Tabitha, Madeleine and Esben in my gallery yet so I am not surprised they're not instantly recognisable. Thank you very much

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Jocelijn In reply to Avanii [2012-11-17 08:37:39 +0000 UTC]

Avanii In reply to Jocelijn [2012-11-17 10:13:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha really? Funny
Ah, I did draw her long time ago, but I don't like the drawing any more so I didn't scan it in. There are many characters missing still so she may pop up again sometime

Where and how did you learn to draw this well ? Although not your specialty, you're drawing humans really well ...

I'm really amazed (and a bit jealous ) whenever I look at your work !

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Avanii In reply to carbonacat [2012-11-14 10:47:13 +0000 UTC]

I honestly don't really know! I have been experimenting with human drawings for a while but never really picked it up until I started to get into new fandoms (the first one was Doctor Who I think, one year ago) and I wanted to be able to draw some fanart! Plus the fact that I got to see many different faces of characters I liked made it easier for me to draw them. For some reason I hate looking up people's photos to draw, it makes me feel incredibly awkward, which is weird, but true... So pausing an episode and quickly drawing what I saw was a better option xD I tried to exaggerate the defining features a bit to make the drawings look more like the person they were meant to represent but looking at them now they're pretty bad xD But using the knowledge I gained from that in drawing random people from my imagination the drawings improved very fast! It's really funny. I think the fact that I already know a lot about drawing different kinds of animals helped me pick up human drawing too, as there are a lot of similarities. And then animated films and shows like from Disney, Avatar (the last airbender, not the blue people!) and Fullmetal Alchemist provided the extra inspiration to dare and exaggerate my drawings further and draw action poses! Because I adore well-drawn dynamic poses and facial expressions. I have a whole lot to learn still but I now dare to show my human art online, haha!

Thanks Though, don't be jealous

I see ! I guess that's something I don't do too often.

I never tried to reproduce (partially or not) someone's at the work of someone else to draw, and I never though it'd be a way to improve ... I'll try that !

Oh, and I'm a lot more amazed than jealous, you know

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Avanii In reply to carbonacat [2012-11-16 15:28:35 +0000 UTC]

Um, I'm afraid I don't fully understand whet you meant in the second sentence "I never tried to reproduce (partially or not) someone's at the work of someone else to draw" what exactly do you mean? Oh haha, then it's okay

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

carbonacat In reply to Avanii [2012-11-16 19:09:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry

I meant : I never tried to copy someone's else art for the sole purpose to improve my skills

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Avanii In reply to carbonacat [2012-11-16 19:56:25 +0000 UTC]

Haha it's okay, I'm not a native speaker either xD Oh I see, no I don't do that either, but what I (and many other artists!) do is "steal like an artist", take over certain small parts of other art that appeal to me most. Like certain use of colour, a way of drawing noses, etc. Take many small things from different sources and incorporate them into my own style. What I meant more in my previous comment is that I get inspired by those animated shows, after watching one or more episodes I feel very artistic and want to try out things I'm not good at currently (which is drawing humans in dynamic poses and with believable expressions) because it's done so well in those shows. Because both Avatar and FMA (both series, but I prefer the newest one called 'Brotherhood') have a very action-oriented story and I just love that!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

carbonacat In reply to Avanii [2012-11-17 15:50:57 +0000 UTC]

That makes a lot of sense to this sentence : "Good artists create, great ones steals"

I'll give it a try ! Actually I feel the same kind of inspiration sometime while playing a game - it makes me want to create one with the same key mechanismes tempered with my ideas

Have you got any advice for spotting what can be improved ?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Avanii In reply to carbonacat [2012-11-17 17:14:44 +0000 UTC]

That's where it comes from indeed!

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about! I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have all these amazing films/series/books I love so much, my art would be less imaginative for sure.

Sure, if you want me to give you constructive criticism link me to a piece you'd like me to take a look at Not that I'm an expert, but I like to help.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

carbonacat In reply to Avanii [2012-11-17 18:45:31 +0000 UTC]

Right, I think I'll give it a try - watching media for inspiration

As for your direct help ... I'll have to get the best out of me before (courage & skills & anti-laziness ). I don't want you to lose your time with a piece of crap (that could have been much better otherwise) ; but ok I'll ask you for advanced criticism some day

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Avanii In reply to carbonacat [2012-11-17 19:47:44 +0000 UTC]

It's different for everyone, but I, personally, get really inspired by stories (no matter what medium), colours (one of the things I notice very quickly while watching films mainly, watch what they do to the mood) and music too! Whether I like a film or series depends a bit on the music, if I don't like the music, I don't often love the ting I'm watching, while vice versa, well... As long as the music has a good story or lets me imagine one by myself (instrumental music) I'm good.

Haha that's all right, let me know if you need help

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

carbonacat In reply to Avanii [2012-11-18 00:06:46 +0000 UTC]

Same thing for the music in movies and series for me ...

I'm really admirating you, you know I should take on your example for a number of things.

Oh, by the way!
I'm currently brainstorming with my brain (= alone ) for another plush. I'd like a new one to get along with Vanilla. I think it'll be another cat, blue-eyed, pure-white fur and pink inside ears this time. I'll contact you really soon about it ! Hopefully you will have time for it

Aww thank you That means a lot to me.

Oh, that's very cute! Would it be in the same pose too? Yes you can contact me anytime, I'm pretty busy currently but that is okay, I need to take breaks in between school work anyway.

carbonacat In reply to Avanii [2012-11-18 09:47:30 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!

I think I'd like her to be sitting (Like this: [link] ). But I couldn't found such pose in your plushies ... do you think it'll be alright for you ?

Her name would be Coco so she gets along with Vanille

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Avanii In reply to carbonacat [2012-11-18 11:26:47 +0000 UTC]

That is a sweet pose indeed. Did you want her to look down too? That is something I have never done before and that may be rather hard. The sitting pose is something I want a pattern of anyway (because my own cat character Mayra should be represented that way) so that's okay.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

carbonacat In reply to Avanii [2012-11-18 12:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah looking down - so she can look over Vanille

I'll send you a message right now for summarizing all details
