Description Debate time! A lot of people [where] protesting an hypothetical US war against Iraq and maybe rightly so. (Time will tell, remember Chamberlain's 1938 "Peace in our times" declaration?).

But since all wars are bad, evil, and immoral I'm still waiting for people to protest the french invasion of Ivory Coast (why are they invading this small country anyway? Is it to gain a monopoly on cocoa, or to exact revenge for their World Cup defeat? Beats me.).

I think I have an explanation and I don't like it. Maybe people will show me that I'm wrong and start protesting France. And they will also remember to protest Russia, China, Zimbabwe and Burundi while they're at it.

Ma participation à un projet du groupe ~francophones Et voilà!

There does seem to be a lot of hypocrisy  when it comes to anti war folk, I mean I never saw anyone criticizing Russia's war with Chechnya.

Beacuse no one gives a crap about France and Ivory Coast, and it's easier to protest against a nation that's big

Invasion of Ivory Coast? France had respect its protection agreement signed with the Ivory Coast, in case of foreign attack and / or rebels. The Ivory Coast has not been invaded by French army.

Let's see here for a moment, shall we? Be it England, Spain, France, or Portugal, Europeans have always taken great pride in their colonial past even if all the colonies did was kill the locals through direct attack or disease. There was one documentary made by a European that was sharply critical of colonialism but the person who produced it got chewed up pretty bad by pro-empire critics.
But hey, what's an empire without torture and misery for the locals? What's a government without lies and corporate ties?
It's like an army without solders. It's like a gun with no ammo. . . It's like a world without empires.

IM just throwin this one out there... but is it possible, that people just see America as sort of a scape goat, for lack of a better word. Like whenever something is wrong with an area on Earth one way or another someone tries to blame it on America.... Than when we dont do anything about it they complain that we are being slefish and lazy. So we go and do something about it and all of a sudden we are war criminals. Theres really no pleasing anyone anymore. It kinda seems like they all blame us because maybe way deep in the back of their minds theyre a bit jelouse of everything we have going for us here in the awesome USA. God Bless us I still say. Ill always support my country.

i think ppl will always like to fight the power cos they think its cool, and recite from theyre favoutrite anti-war anti bush documentaries cos they know they dont actually have an opinion, and just use it so they can all sit with each other and just agree on everything cos theyre scared of debate.

this is great, cos its shows these type of ppl wat else is going on and probably wakes them up a bit, or just makes them quieter, either way im faving this...

Thank you.

Blatant hypocrisy is rampant and no one wants to hear any other story or opinion unless it agrees with their own. And they dare to call themselves open-minded? If you really believe in what you believe in, then your ideas should hold up under criticism and you shouldn't be afraid to subject them to it. The truth hurts - especially when it takes 50 or 100 years to come out.

I don't care who or what anyone is for. You are your own person and you're entitled to whatever position you choose. But don't be hateful to others for disagreeing with you. Just agree to disagree and like decent, civil human beings.

Thank you, avary, for looking at more than one side. And for sharing it with others.

Russia is, in fact, coming for some criticism, as what's going on in Chechnya is presumably much more bloody than the Iraq operation. Only nobody in "The West" protests. Only your massmedia don't broadcast from Chechnya. It's less 'cool' to go protest that, I guess...

On the other hand, I would not compare the Ivory Coast situation to Iraq. As l-courni pointed out, France pretty much tries to settle the situation there as the two sides keep butchering each other, in order to protect the French population of the Ivory Coast. Of course, influences are also an issue here. But still, the military actions of France are waaay different from the invasions of Iraq and Chechnya, when a superpower arbitrarily picks a country to be its weapons testing site, it's strategic base and then drenches it from all the riches the victim country has - and almost levels it to the ground.

I like the cartoon though. It's hilarious and certainly does touch upon something important - yes, sadly, we do tend not to identify with people whom we see as different from ourselves. Still, Arabs aren't very alike to most of us Europeans and Americans either, now are they (well, if you live in France you may be seeing it differently than I, a Pole, do. I dunno. But remember, it's not only about your country - it's almost global, right?).

To sum up: I don't think it's about the place, the actors, the cause... it's about how wide the discourse on a given issue is. America is, largely, a medial culture and the noise made around Iraq reaches everybody. The other bloody affaird around the world don't get this kind of publicity. In other words, "Out of TV screen, out of mind."

Thanks for your comments. My main gripe is about the fact that people who oppose war oppose it ONLY when a certain country which shall remain nameless engages in it.

I think it would be better to oppose war period. No matter who engages in it. Where are the protest marches against the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan? (Then again, the people of Darfur are black Africans, so who cares?). The protest marches against the occupation of Tibet by China? (Then again, the Dalai-Lama has never murdered a Jew or blamed the United States, so who cares?).

As for the French operation in Ivory Coast, has any network broacast this video? (WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES).

seen a couple protests against the US being a nuclear power, guess they forget which country defied the international treaties and tested nukes in the ocean during the early 90s. Ah thats right, france and in the name of national security to boot..

France has an interesting history with attacking african countries this past century, even more interesting their number of colonies.. and I thought people called the U.S. imperialists!

Rarrr, kill France because they used their democratic power of dissent in the UN. I admit that their intervention in Sierra Leone is another unjust outbreak of violence, but it pales in comparison to the history of U.S. police actions and "quick wars". I like the style, but... oh wait, what the fuck is that in the background? Saddam = good Bush = bad? I think the general consensus is that Bush is bad within the anti-war movement, but you know damn well nobody that's PRO-PEACE supports Saddam. That's an immediate dislike. I was going to say I enjoy your style, but putting that there is just totally fucking ignorant.

Excellent art; you have a very good grasp of line and posing. Colours are great too. But I do sorta think you've taken too simplistic a view of the protesters: most of the ones I know are equally as against Hussein and his terrible, inhumane government as they are against Bush. They're simply protesting the Bush administration's treatment of the situation. Although maybe the situation is different over there? here, people are simply requesting that a different method of ousting Hussein be found.

Haha, I love this. Most people probably don't even know about the French situation that you mentioned, not even the protestors of the war in Iraq. I love this image. It's such a mockery of ignorant people that make me lose all faith in humanity and make me want to stab myself. Everyday at school, I hear people talking about how they want to go "shoot some ragheads", and when asked why they want war, they say to free the citizens from evil dictatorship. If they care so much about the Iraqui citizen's human rights, why would they make such blatantly racist and culturally insulting statements about killing ragheads. Its beyond me. And despite their hypocritical rants about human rights ending the dictatorship, they probably don't even know where Tibet or the Ivory Coast are.

This image, however, might just have restored my faith in humanity meter by 0.00001% ;p

I dig. Satire ownz.
