Description

I've been drawing - a lot of kaiju lately.

Just one of several redraws/redesigns that I've been working on.  Once I've finished I might go into more explanation on them all.

MINOR NOTE: This is actually an OC creation of mine.  It is a kaiju, but it is completely original and based on my own ideas.  I may have more to show off of this one in particular at a later date.

UPDATE:

Okay.  Explanation time.

In a world of my weird ideas, this one is weird.  Basically, the seed of the idea was: "What if there was a kaiju that had an obviously human, classically-feminine shape?  But then went on to play around with the expectations of that shape?"  And then that really got the ball rolling.  What if Godzilla fought some sort of giant fertility goddess statue or something?  That seemed like it might be too weird or problematic, but it also made me think of the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea (which might be a cool name for this kaiju, but it also might be a little on the nose), and that took me down a different path.  This notion of a half-finished statue, possibly built as a kind of kaiju protector, but also a kind of idol or goddess to worship by some ancient people, that was never completed?  Like some of her body was still obscured in rock and hadn't been fully-realized yet?  That seemed cool.

But then...I don't know exactly when in the creative process it happened...but I sort of drew a design where the kaiju had a kind of flat-top, and I just added trees and grass to the top of it.  And then the whole idea metamorphosed again.  What if this goddess is finished, but BURIED?  Under hundreds of tons of sediment and rock that have piled on top for thousands of years, after her...creation? Arrival?  Whatever.  And then she is discovered, or perhaps AWAKENS, and the entire hillside or cliffside she is trapped beneath sloughs away in this massive landslide, and she re-emerges, still trapped in a lot of the rock...maybe even using that to her advantage?  And that's when the design really started to come together.

I like the asymmetric design of the thing that hints that the much more pristine, symmetrical design beneath.  I also like how it's a clashing juxtaposition of the natural world with something that might be artificial, or perhaps just something more orderly and less chaotic.  The clash of forms is really cool to me, is my point.  I also like the idea that the rock form is going to be a lot of earthly colors, like browns and greens and some complimentary colors thrown in...but the body of the goddess creature itself is just WHITE.  Or maybe off-white, but basically, a visual clash that's hard to ignore.

I also really like the idea (I haven't really gotten around to drawing it yet) that the goddess has some sort of beam weapon that comes out of her...face?  I've considered her eyes, I've considered her mouth, I've considered a gem or some kind of third-eye in the center of her forehead, still not sure.  But the point is that this beam weapon might be fired initially to help free her from the earth, at least a little bit, but all it's really managed to knock off at first is the amount you see here...and if you squint, you can see her face peaking through the crack the beam caused, and see the seething face obscured and teased beneath.  You know, once I figure out what that final form even looks like.

I don't know.  I really just like the idea of this kaiju.  I especially like the idea of making it into a suit.  The rock and stuff is one thing, that's more in line with "traditional" kaiju designs, but to see Godzilla essentially fight a GIANT PERSON, man OR woman, seems wild to me.  It might be too uncanny valley, and it might dispell the illusion a little bit of two giant monsters duking it out when one of them is clearly a normal-sized person in a skin-fitting suit or something...but I think if done right, it could still work well.  I like the idea that, fully revealed, maybe the goddess isn't as "human" as she's first believed, and the otherness of her form (while still kind of being true to the feminine aesthetic) maybe doesn't make her look "monstrous," but definitely other than or more than "human."  I don't know.  Dealing with some weird things here that normally don't go into designing kaiju, lol.

Anyway, one of my personal favorites.  I hope to finish more of her stuff soon.  More on the way.
