She cut her hair. The style was feminine, and the length too long, but she took her allowances where she got them.She looked at herself in the mirror when she got home and swept the longer hair back. The sight of it made her giddy. Short hair, finally, although it would never be short enough, not as long as she lived under her parents' roof. It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty near it.
She locked herself in her room and threw herself a fashion show. Baggy t shirts, ill-fitting jeans, and those sneakers she never thought her parents would let her get -- "Those are for boys, Erica," said with such contempt she nearly gave up on the spot, but somehow they wound up at the register anyway. Her brother's pilfered tie, her mother's work blazer. Hoodie after hoodie found its way onto her person.
Decked out in masculine attire, her heart soared. Her mother could coddle her, stuff her in dresses, and complain all she wanted about her lack of interest in 'girly' things. That was all on the other side of her door.
In here, she was king.

About the power thing - I kind of wanted to do a thing about power over oneself rather than power over others. When you're a kid living with your parents, they've got a lot of influence on who you are and how you're presented to the world. It's a constant power play - you dress how you want and do what you want, but only with what you're allowed to have and do. So I guess the issue of power is kind of implied?
Man, this comment went a lot better in my head.
Plus the sense of empowerment you get when you finally look how you want and feel is kind of incredible.
