As I was browsing through the art-forum I stumbled onto your post about how 3D-art was not appreciated here on DA. Interesting point, and I think you managed to get out the main reasons (piles of crap and all that).
I myself am not a 3D-artist, though I had a period of 3DSMax modeling. It was not really my thing but it was a good experience
I look at your gallery and what I see is alot of work put into making the models. They look nice and accurate (I'd say this would be my favourite amongst them )... However there are a few things that I see in all your, and alot of others peoples models.
The textures and materials usually look too "perfect".. a smooth surface rarely looks entirely plain. small, discreet dents and scratches add alot to the model.
One of the more important things are the lighting, and how you present the model. Even if you just want to show off the object you should atleast put something other than black space behind. Add a floor to put it on or something. And then put alot of time into the lighting of the object aswell.
I look at this [link] and think WOW. Notice how well lit the doll is to set the mood in the render. It is not just floating in mid-space.
I face this lighting-problem myself as I am a (self proclaimed ) photographer. I can not just think "hey a cool thingie" and go *CLICK*. I need to take into consideration, for example, if the sunlight is good, maby it will be better later in the evening at sunset with a warmer tone and longer shadows, if I should fill in with a flash (and should it be bounced from either above or the sides to add some smooth shades/highlights?)
Ok, I am starting to wander faaaar off in my mind, but I hope you can filter out the nonsense and find something there to grab hold of. I hope to see some more (and improved) work from you. Take an (almost) finished model, and put some heavy work into just setting a background and soft lighting and shadows, and leave the modeling for a little while. I would love to see the difference it makes
Good luck and hope I didn't bore you

oh yes, of course, i see it now. the angle of the shot is like an optical illusion.
