Sashimi lay in bed, listening; she couldn't bring herself to sleep. Her parents had left earlier in the day for the hospital so her mother could deliver the babies. It wasn't as if Sashimi couldn't handle being alone in the house with her brother; she just couldn't help but be on edge. She knew how serious delivering a baby was, let alone two babies. She wanted to be awake in case of any kind of emergency. What a twelve year old could do to help, she had no idea, but she wanted to be prepared for anything.

The front door clicked open and closed. Barely daring to breathe, Sashimi listened as footsteps made their way down the hall. When her bedroom door opened, she quickly ducked her head under the blanket, though immediately felt stupid for doing so. If she wanted to feign sleep, she should have just dropped her head down on the pillow and closed her eyes.

"Hey," Genmai said, placing a hand where his daughter's head was under the blanket. Sashimi poked her head out and peered up at her father, hoping she wasn't in trouble for being awake past her bedtime. "Figured you'd be awake. How was your brother? Did he behave himself?"

"Negi was fine," Sashimi assured. Her brother had thrown a little fit when their parents left because he wanted to be there when the babies were delivered, but seemed to find solace in the fact that Sashimi needed to stay home too. "How's Mom?" Her father's eyes looked red, as if he had been crying; that was enough to make her assume the worst.

"Oh, your mother is just fine," Genmai chuckled. "Before I left, she had a fight with a nurse who tried to serve her soup. Knocked it out of the poor woman's hands and yelled, 'Bitch! Get me real food!'" He laughed at the memory, which helped to alleviate Sashimi's concerns. "Oh, yeah-- and she wanted me to tell you that she loves the socks you made her. They really help when she has to get up, because-- kid you not-- the floors are ICY...Well, you better get some sleep. We're going to see your new baby brother and your new baby sister tomorrow."

"Oh~!" Sashimi gushed at the news-- she had nothing else that could properly express the joy of having both a new brother and sister and of a safe delivery on her mother's part. "But wait; why were you crying? Did Mom have some trouble at some point?"

Genmai wiped his eyes, as if trying to catch some tear that he missed even though his face was dry. "It's nothing bad. I just got emotional when I saw them."

"Why?"

"You'll see tomorrow, AFTER you get some sleep."

Sashimi and Negi looked at their new siblings, wrapped in a blanket together and caressed in their exhausted mother's arms. She smiled as she gazed at Ichigo and Ringo; two big, healthy babies, just as her dad promised. It was funny how the iconic slit-mouth feature of their race was lost in their pudgy cheeks; you could only see how wide their mouths opened if you looked really closely. Then again, babies don't really have defined features to begin with. They had a few stray hairs that could barely be considered eyebrows, for one thing. One characteristic caused her to pause though. "Who in our family has a mole?" Ichigo had one by his right eye and Ringo had one by her left eye.

"My mother had one by her right eye," Genmai beamed, his eyes glistening.

"Oh." That's why you were crying last night. A little bit of his mother had come out in his babies.

"It'll make it easy to tell them apart," Mizuame nodded to herself. Being newborn, unless they were lying naked, you really wouldn't be able to tell them apart otherwise.

"Don't cry, Daddy," Negi said, grabbing his father's arm in an attempt to console the man, though he had now way of knowing (or understanding) his father's tears.

"I'm fine," Genmai assured his son. "I'm just really happy that we finally get to see your new baby brother and baby sister."

"You're telling me," Mizuame sighed. "I had to carry them around the entire time."

"And I am eternally grateful for every second of it," Genmai grinned before kissing his wife.

We actually have this story-- or maybe it would be considered a theory?-- about my little brother. My mom kept on having a bunch of miscarriages, then my grandmother passed away. Not long after, my mom got pregnant again, and now I got my little brother Anyways, my mom says that it's like my grandmother's soul went to heaven and high-fived the soul that would be my brother as he came down to be born in this world Sounds a little weird, but my mom tears up every time it's brought up.

My mom actually had a friend who fought with a nurse who tried to serve her soup after giving birth I hope if I ever give birth, I don't go bitch-mode on a nurse. I would just feel really guilty about it later
