Description
Shedding Light
One cool evening, an elderly auntie corners Inis, having (wrongly) heard that they had become a lawmaster. The woman showers Inis with congratulations and compliments, far too rapidly and heavily for Inis to interject. One second Inis is being admired for their smarts, the next moment the elderly woman’s woes are being dumped on them. One, in particular, stands out to Inis - the neighbour’s warehouse in the old shipping bay has been struggling with intimidating-looking layabouts hanging around and they’re scaring off all the locals! The story continues to grow more dramatic as the old lady hams up her claims. She claims she saw, with her own two eyes, strangers unloading a large crate wrapped in chains as thick as her arm in the middle of the night. And now, to make things worse, there's an odd light filtering through the cracks of the warehouse...
The elderly elf is deeply worried that a criminal gang has moved into the area. She begs Inis and their new lawmaster friends to at least drop by to make sure everything is safe. It’s hard to decipher the truth from the theatrics but one thing is for certain: another mystery has bloomed in Inis' life.
The question now is, should Inis investigate the warehouse alone and undetected, or rely on friends and the safety of numbers? Will the answer to this mystery be a silly exaggeration from a fussy auntie, or something genuinely sinister?

Inis gripped their veil as they shuffled after Divyan, nerves still tangled from the commotion earlier. It should’ve been quick — a brief peek, born of curiosity, for they were no lawmaster and certainly had no lawmaster friends to bother on mere rumour. But after a tea time’s gossip had several others following in tow, they found auntie’s tale quickly turning to fact. Big ol’ warehouses? Check. Intimidatingly generic layabouts? Check. Criminal activity? Hopefully not…?!
“Hope they’re all right,” Inis whispered, a coaxing motion aimed ahead to dim a fixture’s light, if just to hide their movement better. Maybe it was good that they’d separated into groups; Kamlai’s familiars had been scouting the area, but clearly even children weren’t welcome to play near here. They could only take advantage of the distraction she and Karan made for a closer look themselves.
Divyan offered an assuring smile the short elf’s way — fret not elsewhere when they themselves were still in the midst — but he withheld a remark at the thoughtful look on Edrik’s face. His inquests had caught on something unusual… to the back.
. . .
Picking through the strange gloom of the warehouse, the chained-crate of mention drew into view. Was it a crate? Before they could squint for a better view, Inis, as ever, hit their knee on a column, squeaking right behind the lone guard apparently still in here.
Before the double-taking man could so much as snatch the intruding mouse, and before Inis could register what’d happened, Divyan held the slumped guard as if he’d simply tripped and knocked himself out silly.
Huh?
“Inis, are you all right?” Ed’s voice plucked them out of their owlish freeze. They blinked first at Divyan’s nonchalant repositioning of the ‘dozing’ guard, and then to the sage’s concerned expression. And then to their offending knee.
“If it hurts, we should find a healer,” he continued, a Brotherly Hand upon their shoulder. “It wouldn’t do to let it be…”
It took Inis another few blinks as Edrik carried on, quiet yet undoubtedly serious musings on the importance of caring for oneself and one’s joints flying over their head until they at last nodded in vigorous agreement.
“Y-yes! I’ll— ” Cheeks flushed, both at Ed’s well-meaning lecture and Divyan’s tidying hands, Inis motioned like a flapping duck towards the large container in question. “L-let’s look around first, find Karan later!”
In the end, perhaps they were the only one panicked about snooping around…
