Description A guy reads a notice stuck to the wall “All the buildings between X and X street will be torn down in XX month; you will be compensated for your house based on its size.” That’s basically the gist of it. Coming soon: high-rise apartment buildings and shopping centers.

Canon 30V, Canon 17-40mm f/4 L Lens, Fuji Velvia 100F

ps. Velvia 100F is relentless about blown highlights!

Saddening... Who wants apartments and shopping centers when you can have the beauty of old style buildings and nature?

The emotion is overwhelming. This reminds me of my travels in the east. Mostly the small villages in China. Beautiful capture, with linguistic love. fyi, not all b/w isnt a bad thing.

It's a shame such a beautiful place has to be torn down

The trees, the old buildings and the crooked path running through it has a very traditional and peaceful feel to it.

Based on what happened in other towns when the resident's homes were demolished, it's very unlikely they'll be compensated

great pic, that sucks though, destroying such a beautiful place only to replace it with new buildings and shopping

impressive, but i think it will be more powerful an image if it's in b&w. just my 20 cents worth.

i assume that if this isn't the location to be demolished, it's a visual twin. egads. such abominable destruction of old, "character"-saturated areas is commonplace in america and, yeah, money can eat up anybody but i always tend to believe that the chinese have a greater respect for history and aesthetics (and perhaps i'm right -- this is, after all, only one story).

it's an ideal. i adore asia. perhaps partly for that reason i've both consciously and subconsciously chosen to remain largely ignorant of a skin-deep view of that part of the world since i was a child. it wouldn't change the bond i feel -- it's practically familial -- so why do i do it? i've never given that any conscious thought until today.

the adoration of asia led me to "watching" you but the self-induced ignorance led me to rarely reading your comments on your pictures or to others' questions -- despite the fact that i wanted to. it created a tension i've simply ignored because the deprivation is so conditioned, so "normal."

i now look forward to going back through your gallery and reading the stories and descriptions, to look at china eye-to-eye rather than longingly from a cloud. it's like i've just been given permission. thank you for being the catalyst.

This is the part of the area to be torn down. Its already started actually. I want to get in there while they are taking it down but its hard because the area is gated off in some areas. Deep down there is some odd feelings in the states about this whole area. Odd comments like "the current emperor of China" and "there are no women here" amoung many myths about a place that is sort of been propaganderized by misinformation. Frankly on a whole americans and europeans who come here are surprised by the hospitality and open feeling of daily society. A lot of talk here about it not being free and such, well the idea here is that most people are so unconcerned about politics that they dont care whats going on because in a whole it doesnt effect them as much as some might think outside of this country. You seem like one of those people, when they are ready, who should make a trip here to have a look and see this place from the ground.

you're right in that i (and most americans i'd say) would have little idea what to truly expect there. i've always envisioned hospitality personally (and a greater contentedness than i find in most people around me) but i never thought much beyond that. again, maintaining the ideal. to truly see china -- IN china -- is exhilirating just to think about. but for now i don't have the means. so i'll search for things outside of mainstream media (like your photos, stories). that seems as close as one could get to being there.

This one almost moved me to tears. The man looks so honest and hard-working because of his posture and face. The beautiful, old winding path with greenery poking through and the homes nestled around it emphasise the tragedy of the notice.

How long ago did you take this picture? Will/did the residents fight it?

So much contrast that it almost hurts my eyes!! XD I really do enjoy the photos you take because of the stories behind them. I'm a big fan (if you haven't noticed already). :] I hope you're doing well, avotius. <3

Quite the harsh notice, not something that you'd want to stumble across regardless of your home value!

For some reason I think the blown out highlights work here - I wouldn't be too concerned about those. Maybe it is the fact that they add to the starkness of the scene and the message within, or maybe it's the fact that you've been able to pull more detail into the shadows . .

veeeery nice. I like the tones and the perspective. Too bad the sky's burned. What sort of speed did you have here?
btw, do you usually use any filters? I need to get basic UV-filters to protect my lenses but also been thinking about getting B+W or Hoya Pro circular polarizers, but they're quite big investment, so not sure..any pointers?

The man reading the notice seems to stand out a hell of alot in this shot...and I really really like it! I think its due to the dullness of the walls and floor, but its a great effect!
