Once upon a time, there was a 2017 Nintendo Switch game called Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. People are so weirded out by that idea when the announce trailer releases. By the time the game released, it has won E3 awards, great ratings, and it sells very well. Heck, I even like that game. It is a tactical RPG that tells the story of fusing the Mario and Rabbid world together as it becomes a BIG disaster. There is a mysterious beast called the Megabug that tries to corrupt the world, so Mario, his friends, and the Rabbids are off to becoming heroes with their weapons. Now that was a great story so far from the first, so they have finally decided to make a sequel that is worth waiting for five years straight, not counting the Donkey Kong DLC the first one included. The title is called Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Right when they made an announce trailer, I was so hyped for this one so much that I even have to wait a year for it. By the time this game releases, it gets outstanding reviews and a great spotlight of the year. So how does the sequel succeed? Let's find out.

The story takes place after the first and Donkey Kong DLC where everything is completely peaceful in the Mushroom Kingdom until suddenly a giant flying manta ray came by causing to cover the castle with black sludge, so Mario and Rabbid Peach both discovered the main villain Cursa who is said to corrupt any enemy and planet it see's. Mario, his friends, and the Rabbids are off to the spaceship to discover each planet that are corrupted and had to get rid of all of the black sludge. While at it, they have also discovered some kind of space creatures called the Sparks, that are the mixture of Rabbids and Lumas, that ere in danger because they have been captured by the evil group called the Spark Hunters that features Midnite, Bedrock, and Daphne. As time passes by, the crew has bumped into new recruits Edge, Rabbid Rosalina, and even Bowser. By the time they confronted Cursa, they have realized that it was Rosalina all along, but corrupted by Cursa because she wants to protect the galaxy but gets imprisoned inside of it anyway, the corruption happens before after when the Megabug was defeated from the first as it spreads the corrupt aura around the galaxy. Mario, his friends, the Rabbids, and Bowser are going to stop Cursa from corrupting the galaxy once and for all.
....oh my gosh...that has to be the darkest, saddest, and very written stories I have ever heard. This is why I like the Mario + Rabbids series, they know how to make them snappy on not just the gameplay, but also the magnificent storytelling. It shows how the lore works, executes in a great note, and it spends on some time with the comedy. It's not one of those over-emotional toxic corporate cringe stories like how some bad movies, bad shows, bad games, and even some bad YouTube series like SMG4, it is actually one of those stories that want to be upbeat with a family touch of creativity, comedy, messages, morals, and climax. What really best suits the game for being so well-written is the momentum and core feeling of what is happening right now such as the battles, action cutscenes, dialogues, soundtrack, and a depressing backstory. Even this game shows the origin of each planet and the main leader of the planet of how it gets corrupted and how they start battling the corrupt monsters in the first place. When it comes to making stories, it really doesn't have to be important, but when you make a game like this, then the story might as well be very important of what it wants to be, and THAT'S how you make a good game!

The animation and gameplay mechanics are the main reason why this series exist. It wants to be a tactical RPG where you can shoot, heal, shield, auto shoot sight, invisibility, cooldown, critical damage, you name it. Back in Kingdom Battle, you get to explore the entire land in a linear way as you battle with 90 degree camera angles and choosing where you put your character. And now in Sparks of Hope, you get to explore each planet land in a full open world where you can go wherever you want as you battle with a full 360 degree camera angles and moving your character as you try to land or hide. Now that's a big upgrade for the gameplay mechanics. Also, you get to use the Sparks that are a useful touch of elemental critical damages, healing, invisibility, shielding, and more. If you use these more often, then they are really satisfying to use. As for the animation, it's a huge upgrade too. The cutscenes look really animated with fluid expressions, solid battling, and having the urge to feel like that they are doing deep into the events. They show how each Rabbid citizen are very uniquely hand-drawn on paper such as the fluid body shapes, showing their personalities, and giving them voice acting. Even the Mario characters look better, they look like that came straight from Super Mario Galaxy.

The characters are truly known as the most memorable part of the sequel. They show how they work in the terms of the personality and going through the morals. Let's start with an obvious main hero Mario, he is a jolly courageous Italian Brooklyn man that loves to jump, collect stars, eat mushrooms, and save the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom from the King of the Koopas. When Mario starts to develop some seriousness during the adventure, that's when he becomes a written character. He knows what is right or wrong, he can fight for somebody, and he saves his friend's lives, he is a true hero. Also, is it just me, or does Mario in outer space with two guns inspire his voice actor Chris Pratt to play as him for his upcoming animated movie as he tries out his own voice actor's talent? Hmm...that's something to think about. Then we have the other heroes from the first Luigi who is the younger benevolent anxious scared brother of Mario that likes to come with him to every adventure he has got, especially the New Super Mario Bros titles. Peach is a royal diligent princess of the Mushroom Kingdom that has fought back for some several occasions. Rabbid Mario is the intrepid version of Mario that likes to play Italian music. Rabbid Luigi is the childish version of Luigi that likes to be his naive self. And finally Rabbid Peach is the charismatic version of Peach that is obsessed with taking selfies. These characters were able go to on by themselves until they bumped into the newer characters that pretty much saved the game with such creativity. Starting with Edge, who was the leader of the Spark Hunters, but made her own decision and decided to help out the Sparks instead so she can make sure that her ex-friends don't collect them for Cursa. By her character standards, she has to be the most mature person there is, or Rabbid if you are correcting me, and she can fight back who and whatever causes trouble, just like Mario. Outside of character, she is basically a love interest for Rabbid Mario as a comedic joke. Then we have Rabbid Rosalina who is the higly educated poised drowsy version of Rosalina that gets bored of every book she has read and what she does outside of that. Not only that, but she is also a big fan of Rosalina, and she is the semi-daughter of the Pristine Peaks captain named Orion. Finally we get to Bowser. In case if you are wondering, how and why is Bowser in the game for real? Here's an answer. He has flew to the Galaxy to stop Cursa on his own as he discovers that his army is corrupted by it. Anyway, he is the mighty angry King of the Koopas that has run his own Kingdom and raising his kids called the Kooplings for years just to defeat Mario, and he always gets defeated. However, when he starts to develop in this game, this reminds me so much of one DS game Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story where he has no choice but to get along with Mario & Luigi just to save world except this time he gets to save the galaxy, even though that he tries to rule over the galaxy two times. He is still angry about being nice, but that doesn't mean he wants to be evil again after Cursa gets defeated. It is really nice to see him being reasonable again, and I feel like that he is truly misunderstood. As for the bad guys, Midnite is a high-pitched spirit that overcompensates herself just to look pretty, Bedrock is a blocky super-strong brawler that is said to be merged with an inanimate object like a boulder, Daphne is a plant siren that has an erotic life crisis with a nasty attitude. As for Cursa, well, like I said, Rosalina is merged with it, but it is basically the Megabug but WAY more threatening and too dangerous to defeat, as it was explained in the backstory. There are other characters that are main leaders of the planet that tell you what is going on and give you motivation. And Rosalina, is the mysterious ruler of the Galaxy that protects anything no matter what. There is one big thing that saved the game even more is the voice acting. They all sound so unique and awesome in every way. Well, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser sound the same, but as for the Rabbids, they start to talk now in their own voice. Take the main ones for an example. Rabbid Mario sounds just like the live-action Brooklyn Mario from Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Rabbid Luigi sounds like an innocent man, Rabbid Peach sounds and acts like every other meta teenager you have seen, Rabbid Rosalina sounds like a tired woman, and Edge sounds like every other goth girl we have seen too. Even Beep-O sounds completely British.

The soundtrack is phenomenal as always. Thanks to the trio Yoko Shimomura, Grant Kirkhope, and Gareth Coker. They have really done well with core feeling of the themes of each planet, battle, and an event. They sound so orchestrated that you might as well realize that is great quality music coming from Nintendo. Even the music fits well in action scenes.

And so the review has come to an end. It is officially titled not only the best RPG, the best Switch game, but it is also one of the greatest games of all the time. Much like Super Mario Galaxy, it is a beyond phenomenal worldwide hit that has the best story, amazing animation, improved gameplay mechanics, memorable characters, orchestrated music, an excellent explained lore, best core feeling, and has the most hyped finale there is. Sparks of Hope is THAT good, and even the fans it loved it. Plus, this game is said to have not just the game itself worthy, but it is also DLC worthy, with an endless battle mode, new planet and villain to explore and discover, and a brand new adventure with the return of the main Raving Rabbid protagonist himself Rayman. As a fan of Raving Rabbids, Rayman's return is absolutely promising and a throwback to how he used to be, and that is why I am hyped for the DLC. I literally have no reason to recommend this, it's that phenomenal, you can try playing that game whatever you like when you are ready to experience how this game succeeds in a very unexpected way.
Mario and the Rabbids have become heroes last time...but there is no denying that they will be able to save the galaxy too with their most serious adventure so far.
This review, this game, and the heroes lived happily ever after. The End.
