I like your works and I look at every piece - the only thing I think is weakening them is your lacking value control, that's why I did some black&white overpaint and uploaded the PSD file with all the layers to my dropbox. I'd be glad if this is helping you. check it out, let me know what you think and don't hesitate to ask me more about it. I'm just super tired right now so I'm keeping it short.

you are definitely right about the lack of value control. i think with this piece, i almost kinda had a "fuck it" attitude because i was getting frustrated with it. but i do want to fix the piece, and it's very helpful to get an occasional reminder here and there that will help strengthen my work.
when i finish my mononoke piece, i'll definitely fix up the lighting and value for the howl/sophie piece. it was bothering me and at the time, i didn't know what. u___u
