Did you remove the background, or was it really that dark? Because tonally, unless what you removed was like a manhole cover or dead body, I'm not sure it helped the shot. Backgrounds create an interest in the negative space around the subject (the flower). Right now it's kinda boring to look at, and very dark around the edges.

Yeah, I never meant to say that it was "wrong" just that there was something else he could try.

Basically, in the end, favorites are meaningless. Out of six billion people on the internet, 24 or however many liked something you did. That's great. Fantastic. But don't use that to judge what's good or not. Just like how I don't look at my picture with 26 favorites and say, "This must be perfect because twenty six people liked it. Nothing could be improved." I know I have a lot of room for improvement, and that's why I put a lot more value in people telling me what they thought could be better.

Nah, I'm just a voice out of billions. Thought I'd voice my opinions. Maybe try and help a fellow out. Looks like I wasted my time though, since you don't seem very willing to grow. So I guess I'll be seeing you around.

Basically, Deviant Art is full of Yes men who will love everything that you do, no matter the quality. And while that's great for morale, it doesn't help us to become better artists. I'm not saying this is the worst picture ever, I'm just saying there's some things you can think about the next time so that you can improve as an artist.

I never said that, but the same general guidelines apply. Things like the Rule Of Thirds, or Backgrounds, or What Have You are all things that everybody should think about when composing a picture. Not all artists draw the same way, and it would be boring if they did, but they all use the same tools.
That's not to say you shouldn't experiment, and they're just guidelines anyways, not hard rules. Everything I've said is just my opinion anyways. If you prefer the way this looks then that's fine. Personally I like to look for things that stand out well against the background, like that Yellow flower on Green. Or this little guy: [link]

i think you need to apply your own rules to you your work and post a few more images of a good standard...before you start critiquing folkes images...
your gallery isnt brim full of great images..and you havent posted on here very long to start on about loosing good photographers...
where you have it wrong with me is that i dont profess to to being a photographer...i am an image maker....a vast difference....

I've got quite a few more pictures then that, and I've been taking them for several years now. I just started posting a few of the more recent ones on DA because why not. I'm actively learning and trying new things, like that Mirror picture I've got.
I'm not saying we're losing good photographers, I'm saying that we all have room to improve, and if someone offers you advice you should take it into account and maybe try what they're saying. The worst that could happen is you don't like what they suggested and you delete the picture.
What is the difference between an "image maker" and a "photographer?" Because as far as I can tell, they both end up make images.
