Description Program used: GIMP 2.8
Estimated time: 2~ hours
Tutorial(s) used: +Starry Sky Tutorial+ by Enijoi
Music used whilst drawing this: Pristine Beat – Touhou 14, Double Dealing Character OST

I've been wanting to try this out after having studied this tutorial I'd found in the Daily Deviations section of my Inbox. I mean, really, who wouldn't love to look up into a brilliant(ish) night sky that is filled with stars of the galaxies and beyond? And thus my reason for doing this piece as a form of practice lest I were to do pictures in the future with scenic(?) backgrounds like this one.

This was a rather huge challenge for me, I'll say~ Initially, rather than to follow the "three base colour" rule in the tutorial, I went with FOUR base colours instead. I then smudged the parts where the base colours met to make it appear as if they are one rather than four separate zones.

The next step involved a new layer set on Screen to do the nebula that makes up a majority of this picture. I kept jumping from a variety of shades of pastel blue and pastel pink, because apparently, I find these two colours to work best with multiple layers of the same deal. So I've used around... approximately 3-6 layers for the nebula, with plenty of smudging and switching of colours and using the Airbrush tool to add some brightness to certain parts of this nebula.

The stars, however, was the most relaxing part of this picture. Using only two size of the Brush tool, I began with the top left corner there and made several "stars". Once that's done, I began to abuse the "Duplicate Layer" Function and "Moved", "Stretched", "Rotated", and "Scaled" the original layer continuously until I'm satisfied with the amount of stars in the background. Those huge, obvious "stars" that you can see in certain parts of this picture are added at last minute, to ensure that they resemble the huge stars that one might see in the night, light pollution-free sky.

I had a bit of trouble with the Comet there, considering how I had to figure out how to work with the "Fade" Brush function. Once that is sorted out, I used the Airbrush tool of the same colour and held the button and mouse on the spot to create that beautiful, little "Comet". I will have to figure out a different way to do this, but for the mean time, this shall do.

The little landscape at the bottom was originally going to be a rocky-ish mountain range, with a bit of lighting from the nebula above here and there to show the mountain's texture and stuff like that. I discovered how to "Group" layers while I was messing around with the Layer Options, and then I got around using the Airbrush tool again and began to "sculpt" the landscape. But as I sought to find a way to rid of this annoying blackness by "Airbrushing" over the colour black, I accidentally set that layer to Multiple, and BAM!! I get this really neat icy colour that fits the environment as well. I liked it quite a lot, so I stuck with it and touched up on the mountains on the far right side, for they were missing a bit of it as a consequence of "Moving" the layer itself.

..... If anyone actually read the process of which I'd done this picture, you, my good sir/madam, deserve a , a muffin, and a Jaffa cake.
And thus, I end with this picture as my result, and I am very proud of it. Not only was I able to paint a picture like this, I'd also learnt a couple of things about GIMP that will help me greatly in my pictures to come! So... what do you guys think?~ Any tips, suggestions, or critiques that can help me do better in the future?

Picture above is done by Axe-Cell .
Stealing is ill-advised if you wish to avoid trouble.

I love this! I love how your mountains have just enough detail to not be considered negative space, but not so much detail that they take all of the attention from the sky. They also give a nice frame or anchor-like feeling to he drawing, and they help balance out the colours, adding some nice lighter colours to tie the piece together. Only... are there supposed to be stars on the mountains? I guess it could be passed as sparkly snow, or a reflection of the lights in the heavens. Awesome job with the stars there, and the way you did it is actually very smart. Maybe I should turn to digital whenever I know my drawing will have a lot of dots in it. I've actually seen some northern lights in person, and videos never really capture them all that well. This drawing reminds me of seeing those (although the last time I saw them they were all green, which is the most common type of the Aurora borealis).

Awesome job!

If I get a muffin, can it be a banana muffin? I love banana muffins. They're yummy, and really fun to make, too!

Axe-Cell In reply to kittykruger [2014-07-28 01:18:06 +0000 UTC]

... I have no idea what this negative space looks like, so.... That did not cross my mind at all, I will admit, given how I'd attempted to do this nebula as close to how that tutorial had done (whilst adding my own touch to it, of course). And yes, my friend, those are actually stars behind the mountains. You're the first to actually take notice of them in this picture! I was actually planning to do a desert scene for this, but after a bit of messing around with GIMP, I find that the snow-like colours of this mountain range here looks neater than a black one.

Aw man! That is so cool! I would love to see the Northern Lights first-hand! And really? Well, am I glad to know that this practice drawing is similar to what you have seen, my friend.

Banana muffin, coming right up!

Nice!!! i liked the sky, but, if its usefull, you can observe more of this kind of skies, and see with what kind of technique you can do them, the nebulas are usually painted in a soft and wavy way but a little blurry

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Axe-Cell In reply to Karyogui [2014-07-25 00:01:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it would be nice if I can actually see this sort of sky at the right time. Living on the Equator has its downsides at times, but thank you for your tips, miss~ It might be a while before I'm able to understand how people are able to paint nebulae in a soft, wavy and blurry manner, but like everything else, it takes time, no?~

Jaffa....cake!?! Omg yesh please!

Glad I had not logged out yet or I wouldn't have been able to see this very prettiful and difficult looking background. Love the colours here and how well blended together everything is, especially that nebula (which kinda reminds me of the southern lights you'd see in the sky near Antarctica ). As much as I love being spontaneous and colourful, the red stars do look a bit out of place here. Also, the comet (not trail) could be added to or changed to not look just like a 'dot', but this was just practice after all

i wouldnt even even know where to begin with something like this. Really good job by you my friend, you always seem to be improving and surprising us with wonderful pieces such as this here. Keep at it

Whoa whoa whoa! Calm down there, Ashy!~ Here ya go~

Wait what?! You guys get to see the Aurora Aureoles (which is the twin of Aurora Borealis)?! That is so cool! I really want to be able to see such a phenomenon with my own eyes if possible!~ I mean, look at all of dem pretty lights that flashing about!~ It's one of my reasons why I just love to gaze up at the stars whenever possible.

Yeah, I do agree that the red stars stand out very much against the sea of pastel-coloured stars. I won't do it again, I swear on it~ unless I decide to draw a red nebula, of course. And yeah... I really need to work on drawing comets. Thank you for pointing that out as well, my friend~

And I sure will, my friend. This is just the beginning, after all! And `sides, it's nice to be able to draw something completely digital that I'm actually proud of. Thank you so very much for your compliments, Ashy~

Omnomnomnomnomnom!~

No no no, we don't see see them, well at least I don't think we can from here since I've never experienced it myself. I meant near or on the actual continent you might be able to catch a glimpse of the mystical lights shows, and I've seen footage on the news before of it and in plenty of movies I've dreamt of being able to see them in person since I was little, probably after having watched Brother Bear

its just oust some pointers to keep in mind, but I love how you used the tutorial and made something of your own and not just an attempt at the exactl same thing.

It's no problem at all Axe, I'm just glad I could actually get up and leave my feedback on something from time to time Now is halls takes advantage of dis rare hug, mwahaha

..... Goodness dang it, there goes my stash of Jaffa cakes! Welp, off to get some more, I suppose~

I heard that such a magnetic phenomenon occurs only when the planet Earth has reached a certain part of its orbit around the sun. You know, solar waves, the Earth's magnetic pole, those kind of geological stuff? Only seen it in plenty of astral documentaries that I watch from time to time, and a bit in animal-related documentaries too, so....

Well, what is the point of a tutorial when we only attempt to draw it in the way that the tutorial has done it? As someone who loves to find loopholes in rules whenever possible, I couldn't resist but to go nuts with GIMP and truly explore its functions for once, rather than just to scratch its surface.

Hehe, I see– OH-MY-GOODNESS-ME-I'M-BEING-SQUEEZED-TO-DEATH-HALP!!

.......googles java cake*Β  Oh I'll take one of those!

Pretty colors~ 0v0 They're very well blended and have a good feel. The only thing I'd need to point out is the stars are too vastly different in color. They normally have one saturated value or vary slightly, but not as much as to go to blue, yellow, orange and back to red.

Your journey of drawing this picture reminds me of my own. I feel like I should contribute some sort of Livestream or recorded video of how I do a few things to help make things easier.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Axe-Cell In reply to HASBEAN [2014-07-21 22:55:17 +0000 UTC]

Here ya go, lass!~

Hehe... whoops?~ I thank you for your thoughts regarding the colour of certain stars here, my friend. I thought that the non-saturated yellow and red 'stars' would reveal which of them is the brightest in this sort of setting. Too bright, if I may add. Welp, lesson learnt there~

Whoa whoa! No need to feel bad if you can't show your process of completing a picture (such as the one in your scraps). Considering that you've already shown your watchers 3-4 screenshots of your picture's progress, that's already a journey of its own. No need for a lengthy description like mine, or a Livestream video that has recorded your progress; just pictures and a sharp eye.

True, I guess its that I see so many artists with great talent but they are unable to fully express it because they don't fully understand the medium they're using.Β  I learned both the hard way and by kind tutorials. Though I don't know everything I just feel like giving back I guess. Because explanations on how the art was completed like how you did are extremely helpful. But I suppose you're right that WIP pics are enough for now.

…Jaffa cakes!! //brick'd
Well, I gotta love the blending around the nebula! (Or aurora borealis, sort of. ) With combinations of teal, pink and purple, it's not too sharp from the night sky, and not too smooth to show there's just a random black line put in the middle of the scenery. xD The line of the comet looks smooth indeed!
The highlights really brings attention, so all I gotta say is that you could add a bit more shadow on the mountains. That way, there's more of the 'depth' to see which areas are popping out and what not.

Anyways, great work on this beautiful scenery, Axe! Fun to play around with the Gimp tools, eh~? ^^

You've read it all?! Congrats, my friend! Here are your prizes!~ //slapped
Um... :'D There is no black line in the middle of the scenery at all. They're all shads of blue and pink, funnily enough, so I never ventured far into the black and white colours for this piece at all. I'm glad that you like the nebula-thing that is the main focus of this picture~
Yeah, I had trouble with the shading of the mountains. 'Right then, I'll give that a shot the next time I do another landscape/scenic art, I suppose.

And yes I certainly did, Lite!~ >u< The two hours spent fooling around was certainly insane (because my computer kept hanging from time to time), but it was all worth it, for I now know a lot more about GIMP than I previously did. I can now apply it onto my future drawings!

Myeh, too much randomness factor, even though I practically did it here. Still, it's neat how some can create an insane background of forests and islands and skies and rocky terrain coughHASBEAN cough, so yeah....

If your vision is far-sighted, then you should be able to see the consequences if she were to "not take care" of her health at its current state. Then again, there's also the factor that "too much of a good thing is bad." Try to look into those, and learn to let go.

Ah, the stars, what a beautiful scene, seems you made it randomly but looks neat at all, and the comet complete the scene
