Sheploo gets an unfair amount of grief. Lots of people state their reasons, but I don't think ANY of them would have as much bearing if Sheploo was more lifelike, and that sadly falls on the people at bioware-- be it the restraints of coding, or hasty animation work.
No one has said it, that I notice. But imho, certain characters in Mass Effect fall more into the uncanny valley than others. ex: the creepy sheploo smile. Oddly enough, I think the custom characters are less trapped in the valley for whatever reason-- be it more harmonious (one size fits all) facial features, less clipping, coloration, or all of the above --Sheploos more realistic facial texture only draws ATTENTION to the unrealistic facial features. Custom Sheps are slightly more cartoonish-- less valley prone.
By the time Mass Effect 3 rolls around, some of that might ease up, if only for the fact that Sheploo looks A LOT more lifelike in ME3. I think the animators finally took a look at how eyes, eyelids and eye-sockets interact, thank god. The few clips I've seen are a vast improvement. He's still at the edge, but on the other end of it, the more flattering end.
