Description Swallow Sidecar began as a sidecar builder, and branched into coachwork for various types of British vehicles. William Lyons had bigger ambitions and in 1931, the SS 1 was created. The SS 1 used a 2.6 Liter 20 (actually 55) HP Straight Six engine and its lines were handsome and rather distinctive. The SS 1 provided the basis for the SS 80 and more famous SS 100 models. After World War 2 because of the connotations, the company became what it's known as today, Jaguar.

This striking example was built specifically to order for Argentinian Tango singer, dancer and actress Ada Falcon, whose life and career are rather fascinating. You can read the Wiki article to discover more about her and listen to her music on YouTube. She had a real liking for fast cars and was successful enough to be able to afford to have lovely bespoke vehicles like this one built for her. It's said she used to like to take this one out with the sunroof open to dry her hair.

Are they...using extinguishers as car stoppers?

Talking about the engines, for instance, I's ask the Alfa Romeo entrants to start up since I've heard them at the Simeone. I know how they sound when properly run.

A Voisin or Willys- does it run very quietly and smoothly? Does it blow *too* much oil, or just a bit? Actually the same applies to the Alfas since they run oil through the supercharger and out the exhaust to keep the supercharger lubricated. Cars didn't have emissions regulations in place in the 1930's. You really can smell them, even sitting still.

No. This is a regulation at events like these.

Why?

They can and do ask the car's owner at times to start the car. A lot of these cars are garage queens and they want to see if the car actually runs- and runs well. Also in the case of some cars, they may want to see how well-maintained the engine is. Does it run rough, blow too much oil, not have the characteristic sound that engine makes?

Well, at one event awhile back (not here- another concours d'elegance), they asked someone to start a car, it backfired and or something wasn't connected right and the car caught fire and I was told burned out, so after that little mess, it was decided to keep an extinguisher next to every entry.
