Drawing Disney characters in my own style & version is a lot of fun. I thought Ariel would be fun to draw and she was. I made her hair a bit darker than usual, because hair always looks dark when it's in the water. I purposely left the background a bit "streaky/watermarked" because the ocean is not one solid color of blue.

The actual (original) "The Little Mermaid" story is really sad. Disney tends to give fairy tales good endings instead of the original stories, which are pretty harsh.

Drawn with a Copic Multiliner (0.03) pen and hen coloured in with Copic Markers and Watercolours. The bubbles were drawn with a white gel pen.

Highly detailed like usual I really like her hair! The colors are fabulous and jewelry makes her look extra glamorous.

Is she holding a fork?

Yes, she's holding a fork. I haven't seen the movie in over a decade, but I remember that she believes the fork is like a comb (thanks to Scuttle the scatter-brained seagull). I'm glad you like it, especially her hair and the jewelry. Ariel's design always seemed so plain to me, so I had to glam her up a bit (after all, she is the daughter of a Sea/Ocean King). ^_~

Everytime I look at the fork her hair suddenly looks speghetti marinated in very red sauce.

He's a cheerful sort of lad, er, fish. Yep, I gave him the ^_^ eyes because I figured I could get away with it since my style is influenced by manga-style for the most part.

This is great she is one of my favorite Disney princesses. I really love all the detail you put into this, all her charms are so cute. I also love the flower you put in her hair and that she is holding the fork.lol It reminds me of different scenes in the movie, you got the colors just right and scales are great. Flounder is adorable to, I like the pose you chose to draw her in. ^^ Wonderful work!

I am very pleased that you like this (especially since she is your favourite Disney Princess). Thanks for the ! I originally was going to draw her in human form but then I decided I didn't really like her pink dress & that drawing her in the original mermaid form would be more fun (and it was). I wanted to "glam" her up a bit, since her design (out of all the main Disney characters) doesn't have much accessories (even Ariel's sisters have more elaborate hair styles). Yep, Flounder is more adorable witht he ^_^ face now.

Where did she buy her charm belt? I've got to get one.

Good work!

Hi! So you like the charm belt I gave her? I'm glad you like the design! I originally was just going to make her with pearls but then I thought, "Nah, she needs something a little more elaborate." I turned it into a chain & then I thought making little sea items (shells, coral...even coins from shipwrecks) would be neat.

JericaWinters In reply to AyaneShinobi [2008-08-28 00:17:16 +0000 UTC]

Pearls aren't as unique. I love charms and they've been popular for the past few years. Now iridescent shells are big. It's fun to add a new twist to someone else's character design.

You could add some pieces of sponge. Kidding...lol

AyaneShinobi In reply to JericaWinters [2008-08-28 02:27:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! I forgot about sponge! Darn it, I should have made it a sponge belt! *Just kidding* As for iridescent, that is something I have never attempted...I actually find it intimidating.

Thanks for the instant ! I am very happy you like it that much! Ha ha, yeah, Flounder with his ^_^ expression makes him more adorable. As for the colouring, it has taken me years to get where I am at today. I practiced and experimented with colouring/lighting/shadows like crazy. About 6 years ago, I didn't even use lighting and shadowing in my artwork (and it was definitely out-of-proportion). I got influenced by certain manga-artists and video game character designers...I thought, "I want to get where they are at and better!" If you look at most professional artists, they say the same thing, that it took them years to get where they are at.

Aloha! Yeah, I made her skin shiny since she's in the water (and I wanted the light reflected from the top). As for her eyes, I actually made her smaller than the Disney version!

I like the jewelry you've added all over Ariel. The hair is excellent. Her eyes are much more mature than the Disney Ariel. The more I look at her, the more I details I continue to find.

AyaneShinobi In reply to AndySerrano [2008-08-26 23:04:19 +0000 UTC]

Merci beaucoup! I am pleased that you can find all the details in this. I always thought her design was rather plain, so I decided to glam her up a bit. I'm also happy that everybody like the way I drew her hair; it was fun, especially since I was drawing (and colouring) hair differently than I normally do.

Don't die from a nosebleed, okay? *Just kidding* But hey, I'm glad (as always) that you like my artwork. I try my best. Ever since I got the Copic they have helped me do better on my work (colouring-wise). It's fun to use them and the watercolours. I use the watercolours for backgrounds and tiny details.

lol well I won't die from one anytime soon and like I keep saying your artwork is always AMAZING and AWESOME and I can tell you do your best and it shows. One of these days I hope to get some copic markers i've always wanted to use them though sadly I haven't seen any where I live so i'll have to end up buying them online someday.

AyaneShinobi In reply to Vernamon [2008-08-25 23:06:56 +0000 UTC]

The only place where I have seen Copic Markers in my area is 110 miles away at a Hobby Lobby, but they don't have all the colours. I began buying my Copic Markers at Kinokuniya Bookstore (which has every single colour) in downtown Los Angeles a couple of years ago. It wasn't until a few months ago I won an auction on eBay for 59 new Copics & when I was in LA last month, I bought about 20 more. Right now I have 95 all together (plus two colourless blenders). It's taken a while to accumulate them all. They are about $6 each and worth every penny. The more I've been using them, the more I want every color. I believe there are over 300 colours of Copics.

Vernamon In reply to AyaneShinobi [2008-08-28 06:10:47 +0000 UTC]

wow that's just a couple colors but then again it makes sense lol. Well either way hopefully someday i'll get my hands on some and use them for my artwork.

Ah, yes, Ariel is one of my favorite disney characters. I just like her carefree character they way it was described in Disney's version.
But there are the more realistic views on what her real story was about. Disney does have a tenancy to work some 'magic' on their movies. Well, that magic is what pulled me in I suppose. xD
I absolutely love this work, especially Flounder who is captured pretty well here. He's always dragged along with Ariel on one of her wild adventures, even if he's always scared he's always loved spending time with Ariel.

I did notice that the little charm-chain around her waist is also like the drawing that had Cherry's friends in it. I see you like charm-chains. I admire how detailed you made both of them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AyaneShinobi In reply to PhantomPocky [2008-08-23 23:19:05 +0000 UTC]

Ariel is definitely a carefree (and even strong-willed) Disney character (even Belle and Jasmine were like that). Yeah, the original Little Mermaid is pretty depressing; the ending isn't a "happy fairy-tale ending" at all. I'm happy that you think I drew Flounder well. He's a good guy, always at her side.

Ha ha...yeah, now that you mention it...Ariel does have a charm-chain like my OC Nikki. I like accessorizing people (especially girls) but I'm glad you mentioned it...I actually didn't realize that I had done two artworks in a row where I made the charm-chain.

Thanks for the great comments on this & also for the .

You do not remember the fork in the movie? When she first discovers it, she asks Scuttle the seagull what it is (and he says it is used to comb hair). That's why she is holding it, twirling her hair around it. :-p

Nah, you're not "dumb". I haven't seen the movie in over 10 years, so I was trying to remember things about it. I looked online for official artwork to get reference & then I saw that she used the fork & it made me think about that scene.

Aloha! Thanks for the on this! I'm glad you like the way I drew her. I wanted her to look fancier than the Disney version, since I think her design is rather plain. I would think that being the daughter of Triton, King of the Ocean, that she would appear to be fancier (since she's a princess). Even her sisters have more accessories than she.
