What an interesting girl. This reminds me a lot of what happened in Super Paper Mario. Basically the heroes are tricked into breaking a valuable and are forced to repay their debt.

...It's been a while, I don't know if that's really how it goes in game...

I really love this development and how this progressed, really sets him up in a situation that forces the league challenge rather than him just full on ignoring the mom's suggestions, and that grunge yelling screaming moments back, particularly the neopets line, was very well conveyed

This was one of my most entertaining (and difficult) pages to make, so it just makes all that effort worthwhile!

Ah the Neopets line haha. It was going to be longer, I was going to make her also say, "Interfere once more and I'll make trading cards out of you" but I felt that wouldn't be appealing enough.

interesting to hear, and yeah, I think that change to the neopets line makes the part more powerful, the trading cards one is easier to misinterpret

The best reason to go on a journey: to get a new bracelet! That was convenient for the new character, although I have my suspicions about her (might be the moonstone in the bracelet...but that's just me...).
