I actually could beat the game without ever evolving it or using any other Pokemon. I had one that could defeat even my rival's Charizard because I taught it Hidden Power (which turned out to be a water type that time). It had no weakness and took out the Elite Four without a fuss.
And it was just so cute I couldn't possibly evolve it!
