actually if you dont place symbols to separate the sous in each physical container, you'll just make a really big amalgam of souls and metal, they will fuse into a massive monster of idunnowhat

That would be why there are multiple points in the array where you see a symbol for the soul. The centre is where the reaction begins, where you place your horde of unfortunates, and each smaller point would be the location of a container. Each of those symbols is also contained within a segment of the array, physically cut off from any other section.

Problem is, you can't just bind any random soul to a random piece of metal... The souls might hold for a while, but the binding is unstable, and any small movement could yank the soul right out.
