Description Here's an entry for ~Dragonsmana 's Cryptid Files . You remember the E.T. Files from a while back? It's just like that, except different in a lot of ways.

It's a bit odd to draw in something besides my standard "facing forward and to the side a little bit", but pterosaurs look odd with their wings folded up.

Background
All the information about the Ropen/Duah/Seklo-bali was found here , here and here .

My Opinion
Well, hope springs eternal, but still, it's probably not real. A flying creature that glows in the dark, is the size of an aircraft, eats corpses and lives on a relatively small island? You'd think they'd be pretty easy to find.

Still, relict creatures are always nifty. The bioluminescence was a nice touch too.

Judging from the chunk ย of the Monster Quest episode I saw on the Ropen, it be pretty hard to get a through search party and expensive equipment up into the extremely remote area were the creature is said to live.ย

There is a good chance this is a digital picture of a real creature. Hmm... It looks like a Mexican and American species of Duah.

Ah, the bioluminescant funeral-raiding night-stalking rhamphorhynchid...one of my personal fave cryptids.

I LOVE this, man! Great work on the head especially, of course ... the glint in the eye is what makes it look especially good, I think. And the light internal linework looks snappy. And the powdery shading. And the hind feet :3

Do you mind if I give you a little pointer? I'd recommend rounding out the cylindrical forms, the tail and limbs, even more ... look at this shotgun pic: [link] See how on the upper barrel the shading is in stripes of various value ... roughly dark, light, dark, light, dark. For some reason that kind of striping really tricks the eye into thinking that the form is rounded out ... even cover up the ends that show the direction of the cylinder and it still works.

Try it out! Sorry if i got all up in your face!

Well, thanks for the compliments. The shading may be a bit out of my skill range though.

No worries, man, I think that you're at a great stage in your shading! It's been a pleasure watching your drawing evolve both in raw skill and in technicality. These things progress naturally, but at least for me I don't think I'd have gotten to realizing some stuff like core shadow, reflected light, and other kinds of things of this nature without other people pointing them out to me, myself.

Well, the assistance is definitely appreciated. If I knew what was wrong with my shading, then I wouldn't be making the mistakes in first place.

Heh, i wouldn't day mistakes, but foundational steps ... the mind's got to build on SOMETHING, and the way you're shading now isn't wrong, per se. In fact, often times one has to draw something in a way that it can;t actually be to make it make sense visually ... it's just another communication media through which we put out ideas, and flattening or rounding forms is a tool that we can use however we want. Ok, NOW i sound pretentious

A little bit pretentious, yes. Especially considering it's just a drawing I whipped up of a glow-in-the-dark pterodactyl for an internet meme.

I was thinking how unfortunate that they were said to be a boring dark-grey colour.

Awesome. I dig the fringe on the wings, and the squarish fins on the tail. Great design!

Well, my principle for creating creatures is always to add lots of unnecessary doodads, patterns and spines. Less realistic, but much more fun.
