I agree with your notes, except the soft fur. I think you've got it too soft.

Soft fur of that nature in animals comes from having very short, dense hair. It's usually a cat-like quality, and some rodents have it, like gerbils and European rabbits. In the wild soft, close-knit fur helps to keep the animals warm and camouflaged and they typically don't like getting wet.
Rats, most dogs, and chipmunks have more coarse fur. It's loose and longer, designed for taking a beating against objects like trees, brush, and harsh dirt. Immature chipmunks (which is what Alvin and the gang represent) do not have their stripes fully developed and the fur is a bit softer. Also being well-groomed in a clean urban environment helps to soften up the fur but only to a point. Plus, it's cuter!
