Soft fur of that nature in animals comes from having very short, dense hair. It's usually a cat-like quality, and some rodents have it, like gerbils and European rabbits. In the wild soft, close-knit fur helps to keep the animals warm and camouflaged and they typically don't like getting wet.
Rats, most dogs, and chipmunks have more coarse fur. It's loose and longer, designed for taking a beating against objects like trees, brush, and harsh dirt. Immature chipmunks (which is what Alvin and the gang represent) do not have their stripes fully developed and the fur is a bit softer. Also being well-groomed in a clean urban environment helps to soften up the fur but only to a point. Plus, it's cuter!

IQ of 142.
Some people accuse me of claiming that because IQ tests can be varied (and if they don't think or say it I mention it anyway) I reply, "I already thought about that and went ahead and took ten different IQ tests and then averaged the scores."
Technically to some, I have "genius-level" IQ but 142 was only the average. One of my goals in life to reach Batman's IQ of 192 by the age of seventy. Honestly I'm pretty bad at math without a lot of time and certain basic logic problems, and I only know one language (one if you exclude one I made up). And I am an extremely critical person and sometimes don't realize when I'm insulting someone.
