Ah- glad you saw this one! I enjoyed painting it- especially the expression on the rat's face.

yeah, well, the horse is just a horse ( of course) or maybe a Kelpie- the cat was really fun to do- I imagined what a cat looks like when dressed up as a doll - that utterly disgusted expression . The rat had to be terrified, blown up to the size of a horse and then with some crazy woman on his back- of course, in another sense, they would all be familiars forced to take whatever shape their mistresses required. I realize I'm prejudiced, your take on B.J. is more balanced.

So of course I had to look that up, and now I have a new book to read on Kindle - had a quick look inside, and I thank you! I think I heard of this book distantly once before but I have never read it.

Oooh, definitely recommending it! It's the source of one of my most favorite quotes (which also served as one of my major sources of inspiration for 'Wilbur Whateley's Road Trip'):
“But would you kindly ponder this question: What would your good do if
evil didn't exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows
disappeared? After all, shadows are cast by things and people. Here is the
shadow of my sword. But shadows also come from trees and living beings.
Do you want to strip the earth of all trees and living things just because
of your fantasy of enjoying naked light? You're stupid.”

That is one of the great ones! I remember writing to a friend after reaching Southern California for the first time: 'This is the weirdest place- it's as if the light casts no shadows'

I was speaking metaphorically : (conversation overheard in a California Coffee Bar)
-'I got this big house in Laguna, you know? Couple million, sun deck pool, jacusi, views over the ocean, the works, y'know?
-'Yeah, I seen it, nice place'
-Only I keep having this dream, y'know? I'm like setting the place on fire, and the smoke is pouring out, and the flames are breaking thorough the roof...
-God, that's awful
- No here's the weird part, I'm like standing outside and watching my family behind the big front window , y'know I got this special glass, s'pose to be unbreakable?
-Yeah, I heard about that. Sweet.
-An' the family is all tryin' to get out, y'know? They're like hammering on the glass and scramin' only I don't hear a thing , cause I got like this special glass there?
-yeah you said
-An I just stand there, an' I'm like laughing , like I can't stop. Whattaya think it means?
-I hadda dream like that once, an' this therapist I go to says, you need to cut back on the work load, have more fun, like take a cruise, y'know?
-You figure that from the laughing, right?
-Yeah, got to be...

It was, as I said, the strangest place. Everything was acceptable and nothing meant anything.
