Description Children learn by looking
At what their friends have done.
They mimic others so quickly
To speak, to walk, to climb.
They learn to love, to hate, to tell the truth
Or lie with bitter venom in their voice.
Later, they learn to read, to write,
To restrict themselves or maybe free their wings.
I learned the first three
And thought I learned the last.
What do I see when I look at people?
I don't see the scars on their face
Or the pimples that everyone seems to have.
I see their eyes and their hair
But not the physical beauty or handsomeness of their features.
I see what it means to them:
Why they are the way they look.
I see the soul that molded those features
And the way that someone moves or talks.
I see the spark of their potential
And sometimes even the fire that lights their dreams.
Every time I look at someone, really look,
I fall a little bit in love.
Everyone is necessary,
Everyone is special.
So I watch everyone,
Watch for what it is that makes them them.
I see the movements of a dancer
And I hear the voice of an actor.
Sometimes I imitate them
To see what it's like, how it's so easy for them.
How they can see so easily what I have worked a lifetime to
Or how they can so conveniently blind themselves.
I try to talk like them
But my voice is so quiet and small that nobody hears.
I steal ideas from those I have watched
And create a voice that can be heard and a body that can be seen.
All I am is who I have seen
And the people I have met.
I see my friends in almost every move I make
And hear my classmates in my voice.
I speak with a creation
One of many that I have made.
I want to know what makes these false children
So much more confident than I.
So I continue to watch everyone I meet
So that someday I will learn to be myself.
