the band kapatid went through some heavy times during the beginning of the year when one of their bandmates, Chico, committed suicide. I was reading an article in Pulp about how the band was trying their best to stay together and stay strong .. and in a way, do it as if Chico were still around. This idea came to me after reading it, i called them in for a shoot and well.. many months later i've finally finished my little promise to myself and to them. now i can rest. enjoy!

i gave the idea to the band, they came down to the studio for a few hours to get it right. i got them to write down some of their most important lines or phrases on paper, and then i later created light effects out of their writing. then i went outdoors at night to get light movement based on the picture i liked best from the shoot. long process, all as a gift for them because of what happened during the time.

thanks for your reply becky. Sorry, I just realize that my question was too vague. Actually I was interested in the technical aspects of the picture. How did you do the lightning effects. Image editing software? Or is it all done manually (e.g. the guys are waving flash lights), without computer special effects ?

most of it is manual, capturing the light movement with a slow shutter speed on the camera. and then after getting all the right elements for the image, i crafted it on Photoshop to make it look correct. and no, beyond good old blend effects (screen, overlay, multiply), and dodging, burning, erasing and masking, i didn't use other Photoshop effects on the image.

I'm still amazed when watching this masterpiece. I'd really would like to learn to create lighnting effects as cool as yours. Do you have some "making of" pictures or unfinished earlier workflow versions of this pic ... ? I wouldn't even know what kind of flash lights to use ...

thanks very much. the light set up was pretty detailed for this one, you need a proper studio with at least 7 lights to get the shape and glow correct. the light trails were done afterwards, taken outdoors capturing street lights of cars going by. no making of picture for this one i'm afraid.

the effect? i dunno. take them in a studio with proper lighting, take separate shots of light streaks from various light sources.. merge them together with a lot of time on your hands.. hehe

or to show the reflection of the lights in some way

hehe thanks : ) it's a mix of photography and photoshop, and yes if i do edit on the computer i use the pen tablet, it's easier to control. the light streaks on this one are all photography, it's just on photoshop where the streaks match their hand motion
