Description I find that I don't do a lot of girls in my art so I'm trying to do more.  This isn't a famous person, I just found this picture from the photography portfolio of Leonard Gren. In my last couple digital paintings, I've found that I've leaned closer to realism and find that I just prefer the skewed proportions of my normal style so wanted to do a female with those proportions.  Anyway, I'm in love with this woman <3!

Any comments or criticisms are welcome!  (As long as you leave your physical address for possible retribution...   )

Good evening from , nice to "see" you again so soon. This time my tag word was "soft" and running through your gallery I thought this piece fitting. Not only is it rather recent, I feel the girl as such is soft in the way her features are presented and her hair looks. She looks like a 3D model of a video game character or a animated movie heroine.
I am in a bit of a hassle as my previous colleague from Project Comment as in there is not really much to improve.
I saw your reference picture and you did a great job in caricaturizing her features while still keeping her recognizable. The shading is done very thoroughly and her face looks clear and crisp. The "problem" in your last image - the blurred background is here not obvious because you avoided a more detailed background, but it does not derail from the picture, on the contrary.
The colors are also well chosen.
The only thing that might be tackled, but this is minor is that you try to make the hair as crisp as the face - it also goes a bit in the blurry direction as in "quickly done". Apart from that there is really nothing I could point out for you to improve! Keep going!

Thank you once again for your kind comments!  This is one my favorite pictures I've done.  I can see what you mean with some of the hair looking blurry, but I actually did that intentionally as somewhat of a depth-of-field technique.  However, if that doesn't seem really obvious, it still is something I need to work on and get better at.  Thanks again!

No problem, I am glad I could help. Sometimes it is hard to tell what was done intentional. It still looks good.

Hi! I'm from  ProjectComment !

So I must say, the first thing I noticed was that her neck is much too small. It makes her head much larger. Her eyes are bigger then needed. (But I think that you intended to do that but I'm just noting it.) Her chin is a bit too pointy and small. There is a bit too little space between her eyebrows and her head. That means her forehead is too small. (Either that, or her hair is covering it.) Also her ears are a bit too small for the structure of her face.

Okay, now some GOOD things about this. I love how you blur the background, it really makes people look at the girl and not her surroundings. Her freckles are a nice little touch. Her nose and lips are perfectly aligned. The stray hairs make it look alive and not just perfect like you see in many other drawings. Her eyes are very mystical, increasing the interest of others. The bright light made the back of her hairs white and then in the front, with the brightness, is her natural blond hair. Perfect shading, and her eyelashes look super realistic! Amazing job, this looks great!

Thank you for your comment.  All the points you make about her facial structure were conscious decisions on my part to stylize the subject in my own style.  If I were trying to make a faithful recreation of the subject, then you are right about all the points you've made.  Thank you for your feedback!

No problem! And I respect how you create art in your own style and not making it same (or boring) like others!

Howdy I'm from ProjectComment 's Weekly Commenting Project

Beautiful piece! I love the two types of lighting, the warmth of I'm guessing the sun hitting her side from our right contrasted with the blue-white light from a building or something from our left. The colors in the shading and her regular skin and necklace are beautiful, and the eyes look soft and very expressive.

The stray hairs... those are the bane of my existence. I'm not sure exactly what would make them look a little more like whispies, but perhaps a lower opacity? Her left eye (the one further away) also looks a little flat. Not for lack of shading, but if you look at someone's eyes from the side, you can see this translucent rounded edge coming farther out from the colored part. Again, I'm not sure how you would achieve this, but perhaps play around with it? Maybe if you do another layer that's a very low opacity and you just gently brush a little hint of that light yellow-white so that there's a little bit on the color then more  of a highlight where the outermost curve of the eyeball would be.

Thanks so much!  You make some good points with the 'whispies' (awesome word) and I'll take that into account with my next piece.  Also, I see what you mean with her eye.  I think I might have to defer somewhat to the source photo on that (although that's kind of a cop-out).  Either way, good ideas and thanks for the comment!

Hello from

Okay, what a nightmare! How am I supposed to come up with anything constructive on this? I mean, this is perfect!!!!

It's a perfect combination of realism with your own style. I looked at the reference photo and you've done amazing job. The colours are so brilliant and attractive. Though you changed the proportions, you captured that far-away look on her face perfectly. I LOVE the 3D feel to it as well. Are you an animator? It looks like a perfect 3D animation. I love how the light is reflected on her, especially the blue colours.

I'm trying so so so hard to come up with something constructive. Maybe the lighting? There is that really sharp white light from the back (which is SO lovely), and more ambient light coming from the right. Maybe if these two lights were a bit more different, especially the warmth of the ambient light, that could be good? The white on her braids is almost the same as the white from the back, so if the light on the braid had warmer tint, it may be good?

But seriously, I'm really digging. I NEVER see anything this professional and good in Project Comment folder, so i was seriously blown away. Amazing job!

It's seems to be as if you caricatured her. The widening of her eyes, compensated with the shrinking and slimming of her nose, really gives way to that sort of feel. You could be heading towards to achieving a set style, although, if I had to point something out, the left side of her neck really merges into her trapezius muscle, the back of the neck muscle, in an unorthodox fashion. It may just be an unfortunate overlooked thing, so no biggie...

Cheers!

I can see what you mean in the neck.  I slimmed the neck out and don't think the reference photo transferred so well in that area for me.  I'll just have to more attention to that next time.  Thanks for your comment!

Wow! This is still incorporated a clear, almost cartoony style to a realistic portrait, something I see very little, and when I do, it's extremely impressive. Wonderful work...!

She kinda reminds me of Mirage from the Incredibles... But this looks like it came right out of a 3D animation film, awesome!

Really interesting end result with skin textures and 3-dimensionality. I honestly thought this was a 3d render at first!

B2DaRice In reply to seanpt [2016-08-29 18:24:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I love it when people have to do a double take like that. It's a double edged sword though, because I think some people continue thinking it's a 3d rendering and think the pictures less because of it. I had a booth at a comic con earlier this year and a lot of people thought I just did photo manipulation, especially when looking at them from farther away, and I think it drove some people away. Anyway, thanks for the comment!
