Description I’ve talked about this many times before, but man, I was lucky to be a kid in the 90s. running home after school, turning on the TV, and watching a block of superhero cartoons on two different networks? those were the days. one of my favorite shows to watch was X-Men on FoxKids. I loved Wolverine, of course, and I collected every trading card that had him on it. there was one series in particular called “Wolverine Timeline” which was one of my favorites- not only because of the pictures (which I would unsuccessfully attempt to reproduce) because on the back, they told us about his story. this was before I collected comics, and before the internet, so I just read those to understand the character. I drew Wolverine SO MANY times during elementary, and I remember I always tried to draw him fighting Sabertooth, but always balling-up and tossing the paper, because Sabertooth always came out looking too sexy (it’s that damn costume). well, years later, I bought a blank comic with a cool 90s-looking logo on it, so I decided to try again. I’d like to think I improved since then, though I still feel like he looks like a showgirl.
I wanted to draw a bright, colorful fight scene, but I didn’t want to do a big, detailed, gruesome, piece like in the comics. didn’t want blood flying and clothes being shredded, I wanted something simple, and colorful, as if it had come out of the cartoon, or Marvel VS Capcom. what I came up with was this idea of Logan just jumping out at Sabertooth, with no real background, and no indicator of gravity, so you don’t know if they’re falling or standing. I colored it all in with Sharpie and pen, which was a mistake, due to a lot of these Marvel covers having a smooth, glossy surface, which makes color-blending and erasing rather disastrous. it’s most evident in Wolverine’s blue parts, but thankfully, I learned my lesson by the time I got to ol’ toof.
this was definitely fun to do, since, in a way, I’ve wanted to draw this since I was a kid, and also because I got to be wild and messy with these markers.
