Description I think this will be my last Death drawing for a LONG TIME. It's getting silly.

Convention sketch from Detroit; ink on watercolor paper (again); 30 minutes or so, no reference.

I've been thinking a lot about putting a little more storytelling in these things, and this was a step towards that. I've tried to create a self-portrait composition, like she's taking her own photo. I had meant to make it square, like a Polaroid, and put a big fat white border at the bottom; but by the time I got the composition down, it would never have fit. But anyway, you get the idea. Next time.

The perspective of her arm is very well done, and I love the way you can tell that she's in motion.

Death in motion, something you don't see too often. Normally she's very static unless she's talking about fat pigeons!

You can never have too much Death.

I really like this, such a simple but great and original idea for a pose. Telling a story in one image certainly makes a change from the usual generic pin-up poses. I may try to incorporate that into my own work in future... If ya dont mind guv'nor.

Not at all; the world needs more storytelling, no matter how subtle. Thank you!

This is pretty neat. I can never get the perspective right whenever I try drawing a "self-portrait" pic. Good job

Thank you; I hope to use the basic idea again in the future, but on something a little more robust, concept-wise. This is still coming off as an exercise to me...

it is beautiful, her corset's details are so lovely and add something to the overall image...I also like the forshortening on her arms, the effect you were going for worked perfectly

Really? How's that done?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

B3NN3TT In reply to tigereyeY3K [2006-06-19 02:24:17 +0000 UTC]

First I draw in the "ribs" - the long, straight vertical lines - almost as if they were stripes. Then I put a fine cross-hatch over the whole area, to simulate a mesh. Then fill in between the ribs with a repeating pattern of black shapes. Finish with liberal doses of shadows!

Give it a shot, it gets results!
