Description This piece appeared in issue 6 of Image Comics' "NYC Mech". It's a little tribute to Mel Bend's WRENCH PILOT, one of my early influences in pen & ink art.

11x17", ink on watercolor paper.

NYC Mech is cooler than all of us. Read it.

Wow, this piece is amazing, the more I look at it the more I find details and twists that just gives it so much depth.
I don't understand how you've made so diverse contrast, dynamics, and mix of clean lines and grungy spattered texture work together but you've pulled it off... somehow.

Thank you. Like I said before, usually the pencil sketches are very lively, and when I ink them, they kind of just die. But this one kept its energy well.

Awww, thank you! You know, in retrospect, I can always see a thousand things I'd have done differently, but I guess I shouldn't dwell. I'll just carry it into the next one, and use it there.

Yeah, I generally don't touch the sci-fi genre, so this was a bit of a stunt. Thanks!

As if skateboarding isn't cool enough, a ROBOT skateboarding just makes it cooler than a penguin in a chest freezer! Very nice indeed.

Aw, thanks, man. I used to do a lot of skateboarding art "back in the day". You would love Wrench Pilot - [link]

I checked out that link.... the artwork is really cool. It has that great randomness that you only get with cult/underground comics. It's a shame that that style never translates fully into mainstream titles.

This piece further reinforces what I will forever be saying until I see it happen. You should do artwork for Shadowrun source material. It needs you. Thanks for impressing me yet again.

I'm telling you, I've been a Shadowrun player for years, and the artwork there is always fabulous, and all of your inks put me in mind of the black and white inkwork all over the sourcebooks, which are actually one of the best and most lasting reasons to buy them, since you can admire the art even when you can't get a group together to play.

This piece just proves it.. Before I got a look at the robot face, I saw the arm and thought 'Cyberware!!!'. I'll be bugging you about it until a new sourcebook comes out with some of your inks in it.

Thanks; that was my favorite thing about this piece. Often a lot of energy gets lost in the ink, but this one held on to it, I think.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

B3NN3TT In reply to jhames34 [2006-07-19 19:46:19 +0000 UTC]

That's the only piece in there, and only in issue 6. It was a guest spot; the writer, Ivan Brandon, commissioned it. The rest of the art is by my man Andy MacDonald, and it's great.
