Out for a morning race, Applejack is left panting and sweating, exhausted from running, while Rainbow Dash is effortlessly catching thermals in the sky. Just to add insult to injury, Rainbow Dash knocks off Applejack's hat in the process.It must really suck being an earth pony in a land where or the three races, one can use magic and one can fly. I mean, when Discord takes something from both races, then turns to the earth pony, and takes nothing, it must kinda hurt, right? Anyways, I imagine there must be times, even though Applejack is a proud earth pony, that she must get jealous of what the other races can do. Especially when Rainbow Dash goes and cheats...
I started on this around 10:00 PM, and it's now 3:19 AM. So this consumed me for about 5 hours, give or take. More like 4, given breaks. I think I'm getting the hang of using photoshop! Even made a simple background for this one, and have TWO ponies! Plus, I think I've fallen into this particular style of drawing the ponies. I've tried drawing them like the show, even with help, I suck at it!!
Applejack took me the longest. She was out of proportion with Rainbow Dash. You would think, with the wings, Rainbow would have taken me forever, but no...I'm quite used to drawing wings. Though I must say, her mane took me some time. But Applejack needed a lot of fixing. Anyways, please leave a comment! Thanks!

earth pony is my favorite race,but proven fact is the earth ponies besides growing crops,they will have a tougher,more muscualr and bigger body built,while pegasi might need to be small and lightweight in order to soar,and unicorns will have frail and thin bodies for grace and elegance.I love AJ A BILLION TIMES MORE THEN RD.Rainbow is...meh.

interesting side to think about and im sure she does at times but remember earth ponies are about three times stronger and have more stamina then your unicorn or pegasus
as for the drawing, its in your style and it looks awesome dont change a damn thing sometimes its better for artists to add their own feel to something cause this turned out awesome looking and the proportions, applejack is perfect rainbow maybe a little more skinny but other then that i think its freaking awesome! this image just got you a follow and that's saying much cause im hard to impress with pictures xD

^_^ Why, thank you! Yeah, I didn't want to mess with Rainbow's porportions, even though she looked a little skinnier because I was afraid of ruining the look I had already gotten from her ^_^;

yes earth ponies are much stronger then the other 2 because they have to do everything manually and pegasus are build for speed which is why they are lean and thin but if you thought it was good then by all means do as you wish it looks good either way i was just tossing out a suggestion

Personally, Applejack strikes me as the last pony who would ever have those feelings. She just like one of those persons who is so grounded and content with her own life that it's not something she ever gives any thought to...

...except on this point. Whether you want to read their relationship as a close friendship or something more, I can easily see this being the one thing that would actually make her jealous given the closeness between the two, their mutual competitiveness with each other, and the possible reasons for why they inspire those feelings. She has someone close to her and a worthy rival who has one distinct physical advantage, one that if used in their physical competitions would be manifestly unfair. And she's done it before (at least during 'Fall Weather Friends'). If anything would inspired Applejack's jealousy, and even full-blown anger, it would be that. So while I don't entirely agree with your interpretation of Applecjack's character, I do agree completely on this specific point.

Egads! The last time I did a marathon drawing session of that sort was back in 2006 or 2007 in which I drew an ink-wash picture for a friend.
Glad to hear that you're getting the hang of Photoshop. I can see what you mean about Applejack being out of proportion with Dash though it is not very noticeable, and given the slightly more naturalistic style you're using you could easily maintain this on the grounds that Dash, as a pegasus, is slimmer and smaller than a solidly built earth pony like Applejack. I can't make any other suggestions about the art though since a lot of it appears to be craft that develops through practice.

Tell me about it. Even when trying to aim for my own style I find it's a nightmare since I'm not used to drawing animals yet, and has less experience drawing in a more "cartoony" style common to western animation. It's been a real learning process for me to even turn up satisfactory sketches.

There's this one picture I saw of Big Macintosh lifting filly Applejack up that makes me wonder if earth ponies get jealous, and I think I went from there. Yeah. The drawing session wasn't intended. It was always, "Just fix this a little more...just add this color now...just try the background now..." And kept going from there. I believe that's ow addiction starts...
Gald I'm not the only one having issues with these cartoony ponies! I started out drawing animals, but realistic ones, so cartoony baffles me unless I'm drawing from a source!

I certainly imagine that earth ponies are easily capable of getting jealous of unicorns and pegasi, just not Applejack given her personality (with that one very important exception). Still I like where you took the idea (plus I always like hearing about how creative types get ideas and what inspires their work).
Oddly enough I can't see Pinkie Pie being jealous either, though for very different reasons. But as we've seen in "Griffon Brush Off" and "Green Is Not Your Colour" Pinkie seems to regard the laws of physics as just minor obstacle that can be overcome with some impractical problem solving.

As a fellow illustrator that's how the BEST drawing sessions start: you just get wrapped up in your work and can't stop going until it's done.
And yeah, learning how to "draw cartoony" (or more accurately: effectively abstract real-life forms) is as much of a skill as drawing realistically. I'm envious of a friend's ability to draw in that fashion, but she's been drawing in that style for years and had professional training in animation.

Lol, yeah, Pinkie Pie defies the laws the physics, and is even faster than Rainbow Dash, so I don't consider her to get jealous of flight because in a way...she can fly...
