well my favourite tip I got form my late art teacher that always stuck with me is don't be afraid to go darker when it comes to shading.
and studying animal anatomy and fur direction is really helpful, and it's fun :3 at least I think soΒ

How do you know if you, at all, shaded too much?

that's up to your own judgement as long as you keep practicing being able to tell what your picture needs will become easier and easier over time ;3
Also remember if you have been working on something for awhile to take a step back and do something else for a bit to give your eyes and mind a rest form it. That way you may see something you missed or you may see a solution to a part that you found difficult before

using a real life reference can help a lot to, and setting your reference to greyscale so you can concentrate on the value and tone to get a better understanding on the light and the shading of the image.

Does brush setting contribute to this? Sorry I just have a few questions ;>

for shading? no but I do suggest making a new layer set to multiply and shade there, that way you don't have to worry about accidently messing up your pic (I do it all the time)
And for fur? not sure I don't muck around with brushes to much to properly be helpful in this department, but you can always take a look around for free brush downloads but I do recommend checking out Kyle's brush packs, he has a few free ones that I love no fur texture ones thoΒ www.kylebrush.com (some artists on da have maid their own fur brushes available for free)

if you don't mind spending money on brushes I recommend Aaron Blaise he sells great fur brushes and texture brushesΒ creatureartteacher.com/product… he also makes tutorial videos.

k I have to skedaddle I have a friend coming over so feel free to ask more questions or note me I'll be happy to help when I can :3
