I think they made the sniper a little silly with one knee pad

Nah, he's got two, it just slid down to his boot. Knee pads are known to be restrictive and irritating, thus many troops prefer to only wear a knee pad on the side that touches the ground when kneeling. Makes since considering how much sprinting/crawling the Recon class would be doing.
