Description
These are the original Thunder rangers and their zords. They never made it to America but their zords did. They were known in japan as the Dairangers. Their zords were the Dragon, Firebird, Green Lion, Yellow Qilin, Blue Pegasus, and White Tiger. They changed the Qilin to the Grffrin cuz americans wouldn't recognize the creature. Also the pegasus to unicorn and green lion to a black one.Related content

I wonder why they bothered turning the blue pegasus into a unicorn? On close inspection it doesn't look anything like a unicorn, though I suppose the "griffin" zord could have passed for a unicorn since it at least had a horn.
Any reason why only the white ranger's costume made it overseas and they didn't bother to bring in the matching uniforms for the other rangers? I still enjoy that season, though I admit it would have made more sense for the red ranger to have a dragon themed outfit instead of a T-Rex themed one

The white ranger costume made it because Tommy was popular and they wanted to bring him back. Unfortunately there was no more footage of the green ranger. So since the were using some of Dairanger any way they decided to use the white ranger costume.

I guess they had lots of reasons to not use the Dairanger footage in Power Rangers, like the yellow ranger (that would be Trini or Aisha) fighting using Drunken Fist style...

That's one reason, but i think but I heard they just didn't want to change the costume after only one season and confuse viewers.

While I'm now (as an adult) game for the changing of suits with the changing of zords, I realized I would have proably lost interest in PR if they changed the suits in the second season, even if it would have made sense. This was proven when I lost interest when the Alien Rangers appeared. I now realize how much great stuff I missed

I thought that putting a unicorn in an action was different at the time. I was very mature for a 6 year old.

I never really understood how the previous dinosaurs corresponded to these ancient legendary beasts; guess that's the poor judgment of America for you.

The mecha from Dairanger actually were pretty good matches to ones from Zyuranger. The blue and yellow made the legs of the Megazords in each group; the black (actually green) made up the main upper body (although it was armor in Dairanger). While a Pegasus and certainly a Kirin/Quilin wouldn't have much to do with a Triceratops or a Smilodon (Saber-Tooth), a Unicorn (the horn) and a Griffin (part lion) would. A Phoenix (firebird) and a Pterodactyl are both flying creatures. The Lion may have been green in the source show, but it appeared mostly black. They did the same thing with the Crane in Season 3. With the logic they used for the Lion, you could also say that the Dragonzord could have been the Black Ranger's Zord (in theory). And a Tyrannosaurus upgrading to a Dragon seems like a pretty good idea to me ; )

I always loved the Thunderzords. Maybe it was because they were the first new set of zords, and the excitement that came with that was intoxicating

I loved the mythical theme of the zords. Though when I was younger I couldn't understand what Trini was saying. I didn't have a clue what the Griffrin/Kirin zord was.
