The Hellkin: Scourge of the Galaxy

Based on the ideas and concepts of Michael Brown

By Myles L. Edmundson

  • Overview
  • The Hellkin are a hostile alien race that has been known to the galactic community for centuries. And yet, despite numerous encounters and attacks, very little is actually known about them. The Hellkin have been seen all over the galaxy, and since they generally travel in warships so massive as to be mobile space stations, it has, so far, been impossible to identify their home planet. Attempts to communicate with the Hellkin to negotiate a peaceful end to hostilities have always met with disaster. The Hellkin have never been known to communicate outside their own race, save to issue threats and ultimatums. The little bit that IS known about them has been gleaned from dead bodies and the wreckage of their ships. This document is meant to give a basic understanding of the Hellkin.

  • Origins
  • No one knows where the Hellkin came from. All sentient races have had some contact with the Hellkin, always violent. Evidence, both historical and archaeological, has shown that they have been traveling and attacking the galaxy for a millennium. They have been seen in all corners of the galaxy. In fact, they are so thoroughly distributed throughout the galaxy that their exact home planet is impossible to identify. They are known to travel the galaxy in massive warships large enough to be considered to be mobile space stations, but serve effectively as an entire world for the individual band of Hellkin. These mobile space stations are always surrounded by a fleet of warships ranging from massive battleships and star carriers to clouds of fighters.

  • Culture
  • Little is known of the Hellkin culture. No Hellkin has ever been captured alive, and examination of dead Hellkin bodies has never given any hint of their culture. Hellkin bodies and gear all seem geared entirely to the function of the individual. Observed Hellkin behavior indicates that Hellkin seem to be singled-minded in the performance of their duties, as if they are only capable of thinking about the task at hand. Hellkin soldiers cornered on battlefields will suddenly drop dead before they can be take prisoner. Basically, they act more like programmed weapons rather than intelligent people.

  • Biology and Social Structure
  • Everything that is known about Hellkin biology comes from the examination of dead Hellkin bodies. Hellkin that have been observed are humanoid in appearance. Their height and physique seem to depend on their actual function. However, their evolutionary origins are impossible to determine from their DNA, as their genetic coding shows signs of gene splicing and genetic engineering. Dissection of Hellkin bodies has also shown that the Hellkin also employ extensive cybernetic modification and implantation. Furthermore, the Hellkin appear to modify or engineer themselves to suit their function within the band. Further evidence that the Hellkin are engineered is obvious in their total lack of genders and reproductive organs. How the Hellkin reproduce is a mystery, but the prominent theory is that they are manufactured, most likely though cloning. The following are all known Hellkin types common to all Hellkin bands that have been observed in the known galaxy (Note: names and designations were assigned by examiners, as the Hellkin communicate through their cybernetic implants, rather verbally):

  • Hellkin Foot Soldier
  • This is the basic Hellkin infantry. A Hellkin foot soldier is always seven feet tall, and bristling with muscle. Bodies are entirely hairless. A proportionately large head sits on a proportionately short, muscular neck. Arms are proportionately long and end in three fingered hands, while legs are proportionately short, and end in cybernetic feet featuring four clawed toes that can act like fingers...or weapons. Cybernetic implants are obvious and clearly modular, enabling the Hellkin to “retool” their foot soldiers for individual missions and/or environments. Hellkin foot soldiers are extremely tough and basically look like fantasy ogres or trolls, but extensively implanted with cybernetic armor, parts, equipment, and weapons. Very little of the gear a Hellkin foot soldier uses is actually carried, as most of their gear is implanted, even weapons. Regardless of individual configuration, all Hellkin foot soldiers have some-sort of bladed weapon (either a retractable blade, fingertip claws, or a “knuckle blade” implanted in the armor of the back of the hand), a short-range firearm built into the underside of the right forearm (either a poison dart launcher or a directed energy weapon such as a laser or particle beam gun), and the bladed toes on their feet. Any weapons beyond these basic weapons are hand held, and can cover a wide range of the typical infantry weapons that can be found in use by many army infantries in the galaxy. This is the most common Hellkin type seen. Individuals of this type are known to be extremely limited in terms of intelligence, but their behavior and tactics indicate that they are somehow interconnected allowing all of them to think and act as if they all share one mind.

  • Hellkin Fighter Pilot
  • The second most common Hellkin type seen in the galaxy, this type has been found in the wreckage of Hellkin starfighters, such as the infamous “Sting”, a roughly boomerang-shaped light starfighter. Hellkin pilots feature small, primate-like bodies. Cybernetic implants consist mainly of data interface connections that allow them to plug themselves into their craft. Their compact size allows them to fly fighters that are often smaller and more maneuverable than the starfighters of other races in the galaxy. Cybernetic interfaces also allow Hellkin pilots to use their craft as an extension of their own bodies, seeing and hearing through sensors, and using the engines as legs. Hellkin pilots are smart enough to think for themselves, though they are not very bright, and can either function individually or as groups. Observations of Hellkin attack squadrons indicate the same mind-sharing interconnection seen in Hellkin infantry, but Hellkin pilots have shown intelligence enough to function alone, but only to follow basic instructions, however lone Hellkin craft have been observed beaming a constant stream of data to their mother ships, indicating telemetry and control signals, in other words, although a Hellkin pilot can function on its own, it is monitored and controlled by superiors.

  • Hellkin Paladin
  • The Hellkin Paladin is an upgraded version of the Hellkin foot soldier. Slightly more compact and slender than the basic Hellkin foot soldier, the Paladin seems to function in a leadership roll compared to the basic foot soldiers. They have the same basic design and appearance of the Hellkin foot soldiers, only more streamlined and refined. Cybernetic implants seem to b configured to allow an individual Paladin to function as a sort of control node for the foot soldiers under their command. Although the Paladins are a more refined upgrade of the common Hellkin foot soldiers, they are only marginally more intelligent than their troops. Paladins are basically relays for their superiors.

  • Hellkin Centurion
  • The Hellkin Centurion functions in the roll of army generals or starship captains. Like the Paladins, the Centurions function as control nodes for their troops and crews; and command relays for their superiors. However, unlike the Paladins, Centurions possess enough intelligence to function on their own. They are capable of abstract thinking and strategic/tactical planning. The Hellkin Centurions seem to receive instructions from their superiors and are capable of determining how to implement their instructions. Unlike the Paladins, Centurions are clearly designed for administration rather than combat.

  • Hellkin Overlord
  • This Hellkin type has rarely been seen, and few physical examples have been captured. The few examples of the Hellkin overlord appear to be little more than an extremely enlarged brain that requires extensive life support systems to take care of its physical needs. The few examples of Hellkin overlords were found in heavily protected vaults deep in the heart of Hellkin mobile space stations. The examples that have been captured are known to have died as a result of the failure of their life support systems. However, little of their place or function within the Hellkin hierarchy. Although their location in Hellkin ships and extensive protection gives the impression that they are the Hellkin leaders, their exact function is unknown as they are little more than a brain and they have so far been dead by the time they have been seen.

  • Closing information
  • Because the Hellkin are interconnected through their cybernetics, they don't communicate verbally. However, despite their interconnection, they do not appear to have a hive mind, as their society is too structured with clearly defined levels, and the higher ranked Hellkin show clear individuality, while the lower ranked Hellkin have shown little more intelligence than common animals. The leading theory is that the Hellkin were created as some sort of weapon that destroyed their creators and escaped to terrorize the galaxy for centuries. Information can't be obtained from the Hellkin, as their soldiers drop dead before they can be taken alive, though the method of death has never been determined, and Hellkin ships that have been found with computers wipe clean of data and key systems melted down or sabotaged. The Hellkin are essentially a violent mystery terrorizing the galaxy. The best policy in dealing with them is avoidance where feasible.

He misspells a lot of things, and not just here.  Let him be; he refuses to use spell checkers.

Oh, so am I.  He comes up with some pretty neat stuff, but his bad writing- or rather, his refusal to use spell-checker programs to correct bad writing- brings it down a notch.
